Job goal
The director of student services provides strategic leadership and oversight for a comprehensive system of student support services. This role ensures equitable access to mental health resources, counseling programs, section 504 accommodations, health services, and specialized services, including indian education and supports for students experiencing homelessness. The director works collaboratively with district leaders, school administrators, families, and community partners to promote student well-being, remove barriers to learning, and support academic success for all students.
Essential duties and responsibilities
Leadership & program oversight
* develop, implement, and evaluate a district-wide framework for student support services aligned with district goals.
* supervise and support staff across multiple departments, including counseling, mental health services, section 504 coordination, nursing services, homeless education, and indian education.
* ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to student services, including section 504 and the mckinney-vento homeless assistance act.
* lead crisis response planning and coordination for student mental health and safety concerns.
Mental health, counseling & health services
* oversee the delivery of school-based mental health services, including prevention, intervention, and postvention support.
* provide leadership for counseling programs (academic, social/emotional, and college/career readiness).
* support and supervise school nursing services to ensure student health needs are met and aligned with district policies and public health guidance.
* establish partnerships with community mental health and healthcare providers.
* monitor trends in student well-being and implement data-informed strategies.
Section 504 & student support plans
* ensure consistent implementation of section 504 processes across all schools.
* provide training and guidance to staff on accommodations, legal requirements, and best practices.
* monitor compliance and resolve complex cases involving student needs and family concerns.
* lead and coordinate the student threat assessment process by identifying, evaluating, and responding to potential safety concerns involving students.
* collaborate with school administrators, counselors, law enforcement, and mental health professionals to develop intervention and support plans for at-risk students.
* support school sites and the school leadership team with safety threat assessments.
* maintain accurate documentation of threat assessment cases, safety plans, referrals, and wrap-around services in compliance with district policies and confidentiality requirements.
* provide student services support guidance and training to staff on recognizing warning signs, reporting procedures, and best practices related to student safety and behavioral intervention.
* facilitate communication with students, families, and community agencies to ensure appropriate support services and crisis response measures are implemented.
* monitor and review ongoing student cases to assess progress, evaluate risk levels, and adjust intervention strategies as needed.
* support schools to ensure compliance with district, state, and federal regulations regarding school safety, student conduct, and behavioral threat assessment protocols.
Homeless education & student advocacy
* oversee services for students experiencing homelessness, ensuring compliance with mckinney-vento requirements.
* remove barriers to enrollment, attendance, and academic success for homeless students.
* coordinate transportation, community resources, and wraparound support for eligible students and families.
* train staff on the identification and support of homeless students.
Indian education & specialized programs
* direct and support indian education programming in alignment with federal guidelines and community needs.
* engage with tribal partners, families, and stakeholders to ensure culturally responsive practices.
* oversee additional student support programs as assigned (e.g., foster care supports, at-risk student services).
Collaboration & communication
* serve as a key advisor to district leadership on student wellness, health, and support services.
