Job DescriptionPositions in this job family are responsible for conducting specialized training and staff development programs at an assigned correctional facility, a training academy, or a department region/division. This includes evaluating and determining employee training needs, preparing required curriculum, and delivering training on various topics and skills.
Typical Functions- Conduct job analyses and assessments to evaluate employee training needs.
- Evaluate and develop curriculum, including lesson plans, participant manuals, videos, and graphics.
- Administer administrative work including scheduling and maintaining training records.
- Conduct classroom training, workshops, or seminars to increase knowledge and skill levels of employees.
- Prepare weekly and/or quarterly training reports.
- Schedule and coordinate training sessions and locations.
- Coordinate department or division training or organizational development programs.
- Train contracted staff and occasionally manage contracts.
This is the basic entry level at a facility or district. Employees perform routine professional-level work in completing various training activities, including conducting training using existing materials and plans, assisting in program development, and maintaining training records.
Level IIThis is the career level of this job family. Employees have full responsibility for developing and conducting various types of training and related activities in a correctional training program at a facility, unit, or district. Responsibilities include preparing lesson plans, conducting classes, workshops, or seminars, evaluating participant results, and preparing required reports.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and CompetenciesLevel I:
Knowledge of training principles, correctional security policies, and various adult education equipment. Ability to conduct classroom training, communicate effectively orally and in writing, prepare lesson plans, and maintain relationships. Proficiency in spreadsheets and word processing.
Level II:
Includes all Level I requirements plus a strong understanding of department policy and procedures. Ability to lead training initiatives and manage program development independently.
- Level I:
Associate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience. - Level II:
Bachelor’s degree plus one additional year of qualifying experience, or equivalent combination; a master’s degree in adult education or human resource development is also acceptable.
- Some positions require a minimum of 80 hours of training as a certified subject matter instructor or subject matter expert instructor in firearms, CPR, First Aid, self-defense, etc., or training in these areas once hired.
- Position may require significant driving; applicants must have a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment and maintain a valid license while assigned.
