TECHNICIAN II – QUALITY CHEMICAL LAB
Daylight shift. This role focuses on the preparation of steel, alloy, and slag specimens and the analysis of these specimens using instrumental methods.
Primary Responsibilities- Prepare and process test specimens using equipment such as abrasive saws, disk and belt sanders, horizontal grinder, and drill presses.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance, including adjustments to sample preparation machinery and auxiliary equipment such as optical emission spectrometers.
- Inspect test specimens for quality criteria, reject poor quality samples, and request replacements from internal customers as required.
- Register new test specimens into the electronic laboratory management system (LIMS) and identify samples according to standard operating procedures.
- Accurately analyze furnace and product specimens using C/S combustion instruments, N/O fusion instruments, optical emission spectrometers, SEM, and inverted microscope.
- Maintain instruments according to the intervals required by SOP.
- Review test data and apply appropriate corrections based on certified reference material analyses or statistical means.
- Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.
- High school diploma required; additional relevant experience preferred.
- Associate degree in Chemistry or two years in a physical science curriculum preferred.
- One to two years of relevant laboratory experience and at least six months as a Technician I required.
- Works under moderate supervision/guidance, accountable for individual results and team impact.
- Ensures a safe workplace and promotes environmental protection.
- Applicable knowledge of chemical lab testing procedures, equipment (C/S, N/O, optical emission spectrometer, SEM, inverted microscope) and statistical analysis.
- Experience with instrument software, type correction, and LIMS system usage.
- Ability to operate and maintain chemical lab equipment and perform routine maintenance and minor repairs.
- Organizational and communication skills; ability to follow priorities and make decisions.
- Capacity to lift and carry items up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to work with and without direct supervision.
