Purpose
:
Operate power equipment and perform related tasks in the maintenance and repair of highways.

Typical Functions
  • Operate heavy machinery such as trucks, tractors, road graders, dozers, front‑end loaders, cranes, backhoes, paint machines, semi‑trailers, snow removal equipment.
  • Perform minor repairs and maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Repair roadway shoulder or bridge deck failures.
  • Repair and replace signs, posts, guardrails, fences.
  • Provide traffic control assistance using stop/slow signs or flags.
  • Apply herbicide to highway right‑of‑ways.
  • Remove debris (tires, animal carcasses, spilled items).
Level Descriptor

Basic level operating under close supervision; performing unskilled and semi‑skilled tasks in construction, maintenance, repair of highways.

Education and Experience

Level I:
None.

Level II
:
One year experience in operating heavy equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies

Safe operation and maintenance of power equipment; manual labor; ability to maintain and operate power equipment; follow instructions.

Special Requirements
  • Valid Oklahoma driver's license at time of employment.
  • Commercial driver’s license class A or B possible requirement; CDL tank vehicle endorsement needed.
  • CDL class A required within 5 months for ODOT/OTTA.
  • Pass drug test prior to appointment.
  • Ability to perform travel, work irregular hours, on‑call duty, possess telephone in residence.
  • Physical demands: stand, walk, reach, talk, hear, sit, manipulate, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl; lift 80–100 pounds; vision requirements.
  • May be considered safety sensitive per 63 O.S. 427.8.
