Position: Para educator, Job 26-0531 SL

Job Summary

This is a 6.75 hours per day, 180 days per year para educator position with benefits at Serene Lake Elementary School. Anticipated start date is September 1, 2026. Hours are 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. (includes a 30‑minute lunch and 15 minutes unpaid).

The successful candidate will work under the direction of the teacher in the classroom with students who have challenging behaviors. Position includes supervision and resource room support.

Responsibilities
  • Assist teacher(s) with daily supervision of students to maintain a safe, positive learning environment.
  • Administer student tests, collect and maintain diagnostic data, update records, and assess progress.
  • Monitor and manage student behavior; share observations with teachers and staff.
  • Implement strategies to address diverse student needs and support individual growth.
  • Provide clerical and general classroom assistance including data entry, correspondence, copying, filing, and preparation of materials.
  • Administer first aid, medical assistance, physical support, and personal care for ill, medically fragile, or disabled children.
  • Assist with physical and adaptive equipment use, feeding, toileting, and mobility support.
  • Track and dispense authorized student medications.
  • Perform crossing guard duties before and after school; supervise in cafeteria, recess, and other areas.
  • Participate in meetings and training to improve skills, implement school initiatives, and address student needs.
  • Comply with district policies and maintain consistent presence at the assigned site.
  • May be reassigned to other duties as needed.
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of math, spelling, reading, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Desire and aptitude to work with students.
  • Ability to interact positively with students, supervisors, and staff.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Effective management of student behavior.
  • Accuracy, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines amid interruptions.
  • Willingness to learn to operate classroom equipment.
  • Ability to meet the physical health and safety needs of students.
  • Proficiency in providing physical assistance and safe lifting, using adaptive equipment.
  • Knowledge of computer applications that assist student learning.
  • Ability to strengthen job‑related competencies.
Education & Certification
  • At least eighteen years old and hold a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Associate degree or higher from an accredited college/university.
  • 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher.
  • Completed a para educator apprenticeship registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
  • Passing score on one of the PESB‑approved assessments: ETS Para Pro, Pearson’s Paraprofessional, or Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Program.
  • May need to complete behavior modification or safe physical restraint training, depending on assignment.
Physical Requirements

Standing, walking, crouching, stooping, twisting knee or neck; lifting/carrying; pushing/pulling; talking; hearing and vision requirements listed. Percent of time for each activity ranges from Occasionally (1‑33%) to Continually (66‑100%).
