Street Maintenance Worker

This position is open until filled. Priority consideration will be provided to current City of Edmonds employees who are qualified bargaining unit members and apply by Wednesday, April 22, 2026 at 4:30 PM. Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled duties in the construction, maintenance and repair of City streets; assists in the maintenance and repair of traffic control devices and right-of-way signs and symbols; maintenance and repair of storm infrastructure and systems; operates a variety of vehicles, specialized equipment and hand and power tools in order to keep public right of ways safe and operational.

New hires generally start between $6,565.50 and $7,239.00 per month. Placement within the position's full wage scale is based on qualifications and professional experience. The full wage scale for this position is between $6,565.50 and $7,981.50 per month.

About the Department:
Edmonds Street Department consists of one manager, one lead and 6 crew members that maintain right of way assets including, but not limited to: streets, sidewalks, alleys, traffic markings-signals-signage, sidewalks, bicycle/pedestrian facilities, roadside vegetation, snow and ice control, public street and pedestrian lighting, etc. The department works in cooperation with the storm department's seven member team often sharing manpower and equipment to achieve the department's goals.

Edmonds provides a full range of services, including contracted fire services, police services a municipal court, a community pool, a regional performing arts facility, public works and utilities, a regional wastewater treatment facility, along with community events and services through our Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Services Department.

Six department directors report directly to the Mayor and oversee approximately 264 full–time-equivalent employees.

Examples of Duties

Essential functions and responsibilities include:

  • Performs a variety of semi-skilled duties in the maintenance and repair of City streets, alleys, right-of-ways and sidewalks.
  • Prepares and utilizes materials to repair streets; repairs utility pavement cuts; patches potholes and seals cracks.
  • Digs holes and trenches manually for proper installation of sign posts and piping; forms, prepares, pours and finishes concrete sidewalks or walkways.
  • Cuts down, removes trees and vegetation in and around intersections and roadways and removes debris during and after weather related storms.
  • Performs flagging duties, sets up traffic control zones for work projects
  • Maintains traffic control markings including: roadway striping, crosswalks, directional arrows and other markings according to state laws and City needs; lays out new centerlines and crosswalks
  • Operates a variety of equipment including: street sweepers, loaders, backhoe, spray equipment, paint striper, dump truck, jack hammer, specialized equipment and hand and power tools.
  • Operates snow plowing equipment to remove snow, apply chemicals, salt and/or sand to control ice.
  • Provides barricades, cones, signs and banners for community events.
  • Installs pipe to repair or restore/increase city storm water system; maintains routine records of work performed including: equipment usage, preventive maintenance and needed repairs; responds to emergency situations on a 24-hour basis.
Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High School Diploma/GED Certificate required and
  • Six months of experience is required in construction or related field of work that includes operation of associated equipment and tools, preferably in a municipal or public sector environment.
  • Experience with concrete, asphalt, and the operation of storm systems is preferred.
  • OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Required Licenses or Certifications:
  • A valid Driver's License at time of hire and a driving record that is acceptable to the City's insurance requirements. Out of state candidates must obtain their WA State Driver's License within 30 days after moving to WA
  • Class A CDL with air brake and tanker endorsements within one year of date of hire.
  • Flagging Certification within 3 years of date of hire.
  • CPR, First Aid, AED, and Bloodborne Pathogen Cards within 2 years of date of hire.
  • Other specialty certifications/licenses as required by state and federal law and/or OSHA and WAC regulations may be required within a specified period of time after hire (including IMSA Signs and Markings Level I or II Certification).
