Job Overview
The Scrap Metals Trader will be responsible for the execution and evaluation of trades for the Commercial Metals Trading Group. This full‑time position is based out of our Edmonton Office and will involve managing all aspects of physical trade execution, contract oversight, and relationship building with suppliers and customers.
Responsibilities- Analyze the metals commodity market (foreign and domestic) for demand, inventory, and margins.
- Evaluate physical and financial trading and asset enhancement opportunities, organic or inorganic.
- Execute physical shipments safely and cost‑effectively, ensuring compliance with contract terms.
- Manage and control all applicable buy/sell contracts and associated shipped volumes.
- Develop relationships with new customers while maintaining existing ones.
- Identify long‑term opportunities to grow markets and acquire assets to increase business sustainability.
- Collaborate with production accounting and finance to track volumes, quality, and revenues.
- Ensure all transactions comply with internal trading, credit, and risk policies.
- Maintain positive relationships with all internal customers including metal recycling yards.
- Stay current on global market developments and economic or political changes.
- Forecast market direction and work with the Metals Recycling team to plan trades.
- Lock in product spreads and facility profit margins during index windows.
- Resolve supplier issues regarding late shipments or quality concerns amicably.
- Discuss freight with shipping lines and visit suppliers to inspect materials.
- Work with sales team to keep supplier pricing competitive.
- Negotiate agreements that maximize volume while maintaining margin.
- Assist upper management in developing purchasing strategy.
- Degree in Business, Engineering, Computer Programming, Commerce, or Finance.
- Experience in scrap metals trading or a business development role.
- Strong background and knowledge of the metals recycling industry.
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Programming skills considered an asset.
- Excellent understanding of product, logistics, risk, and best practices for trade execution.
- Detail‑oriented, research‑savvy, and able to analyze economic drivers.
- Strong ability to build relationships internally and externally with regulators, vendors, and contractors.
- High accountability, common sense solutions, and professional decision making.
- Positive, self‑motivated, energetic team player, willing to work independently in a fast‑paced environment.
