About

The Role

Our client, a First Nation located in the North within Western Canada is currently seeking a Director of Finance to join their team. Reporting directly to the CAO and working on behalf of the Nation and its community members, the Director of Finance is responsible for the day-to-day accounting and financial management, oversight of the financial administration and ensuring compliance with accounting standards.

The Director of Finance plays a critical role in supporting continued growth, providing financial insight and strategic advice in partnership with the CAO, and is hands on in their direct responsibilities of financial reporting, budgeting and internal controls.

Key Responsibilities Budgeting & Financial Planning
  • Lead the development and integration of the annual budget
  • Consolidate department budgets, evaluate accuracy and alignment with strategic goals.
  • Create multi-year financial plan, capital plans, and risk management plans for presentation and CAO review
Financial Reporting
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, and ad hoc financial reports
  • Develop financial highlights memos and analysis on financial performance and emerging risks.
  • Preparation of audit schedules and ensure compliance with accounting standards.
  • Process funding requirements and ensure funding reporting is submitted on time
  • Oversee payroll and benefits financial transactions and reporting in accordance with legislation
Cash & Bank Management
  • Oversee bank accounts, including approvals for opening/closing accounts, and ensure monthly reconciliation.
  • Ensure proper segregation of duties in all cash-handling and banking activities.
  • Supervise the preparation of cheque runs and ensure authorization procedures are followed.
  • Oversee Nation’s pension plan and communicate directly with brokers and educate members
Audit & Risk Management
  • Coordinate preparation for annual audits and support the external auditor with required documentation.
  • Lead financial risk assessments and reporting, ensuring mitigation strategies are in place.
  • Ensure that financial irregularities, breaches, and concerns are reported, investigated, and addressed appropriately.
Leadership & Staff Supervision

Collaborate with Department Managers to ensure timely and accurate budget submissions and financial updates.

Lead and mentor accounting and finance staff and provide training and guidance

Skills And Qualifications Education & Experience
  • A degree in Accounting, Finance, or related discipline; CPA designation is preferred
  • 5+ years of financial management experience, ideally in a First Nation, non-profit, or public sector environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial reporting, budgeting, strategic planning, and compliance.
Skills & Knowledge
  • In-depth understanding of accounting principles, internal control systems, and financial reporting.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in financial management systems (e.g., Sage Intact) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of Indigenous governance, funding mechanisms, and financial frameworks is an asset.
WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Hybrid combination of remote and on-site position with occasional overtime during peak reporting periods.
  • Interaction with Nation Members, staff, auditors, funders, and external stakeholders.
  • Must maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and cultural sensitivity always.
