Alberta Blue Cross has an opening for an experienced permanent full time legal professional to join our growing Legal Services department as Legal Counsel. As the successful candidate, you support the Legal Services team in delivering practical, timely legal advice across Alberta Blue Cross.
Reporting directly to the Vice President and General Counsel, the successful candidate will play a key role in proactively in identifying, managing, and controlling legal and operational risks, with particular focus on privacy and data protection matters while providing practical, solution-oriented advice to stakeholders across the organization. Working closely with the Privacy, Benefit Services, Human Resources and Claims Assurances departments, this role serves as a trusted advisor to the business, delivery practical and strategic legal guidance.
A strong grounding in privacy law is essential, complemented by experience in insurance, litigation and/or employment law.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
Provide timely, practical and strategic legal advice and guidance on a variety of legal issues related to health and life insurance, privacy, human rights and employment law.
Draft, review and interpret contracts, policies, precedents and internal client facing communications.
Work collaboratively with business units and our Privacy team to identify, address and mitigate privacy issues, including incident response and privacy by design initiatives.
Support the organization’s responsible and ethical expansion of AI initiatives.
Monitor and advise on legal and legislative developments impacting the organization, translating legal change into clear, actionable guidance.
Lead and manage routine litigation and collection files from intake through resolution.
Support the Vice President - General Counsel on complex matters, investigations and strategic initiatives.
WHAT
YOU WILL HAVE:
Law degree from a recognized institution and membership in good standing of the Law Society of Alberta.
5+ years relevant legal experience, ideally gained in-house and/or at a reputable law firm.
Demonstrated experience or strong working knowledge of insurance law, privacy legislation and employment and human rights law.
Excellent judgement and ability to balance legal risk with business objectives.
Strong drafting, analytical and problem-solving skills, with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
Proven ability to manage multiple matters simultaneously, set priorities, and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment.
Litigation experience, including managing files independently and working with external counsel, is an asset
A collaborative, approachable style, with the confidence to work independently and provide clear, pragmatic advice to diverse stakeholders.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, professional discretion, and sound judgment.
