Engagement and Communications Assistant, Edmonton

Edmonton, AB, Edmonton, AB, CA

Taking care of our environment has never been more important than it is today. The Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) is looking for an Engagement and Communications Assistant to join a team committed to protecting our most important natural areas and the plants and animals they sustain.

NCC is the nation’s leading not‑for‑profit, private land conservation organization, working to protect our most important natural areas and the species they sustain. Since 1962, we have brought people together to conserve and restore more than 15 million hectares across Canada. NCC takes a collaborative, evidence‑based approach to achieve conservation success for the sake of nature and Canadians. With a national office in Toronto and seven regional offices across the country, NCC delivers results you can walk on.

NCC recognizes that we work on lands that have long been cared for by Indigenous Peoples under their own laws and knowledge systems. We are committed to transforming how we do our work, advancing Reconciliation through conservation, and working with Indigenous Peoples in meaningful, respectful, and supportive ways.

General Description:

Share your passion for the environment with Albertans of all ages! Inspire others to take part in meaningful, hands‑on conservation work with the Nature Conservancy of Canada by joining the engagement and communications team in Alberta. As an Alberta engagement and communications assistant based out of the Edmonton area, you will assist with the coordination of volunteer‑driven stewardship projects and community engagement events on NCC conservation lands and take a lead role in program delivery on the ground.

Working closely with the Volunteer Program Manager and Communications Manager, you will help develop and implement creative approaches to engaging the public in environmental conservation. This role offers the opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in both field and office settings while contributing to the work of a national environmental non‑profit charity organization.

The Engagement and Communications Assistant will support and/or lead single‑day volunteer activities to engage individuals of all ages in priority hands‑on conservation work, including habitat restoration, species surveys, and infrastructure improvements, while providing a fun and educational experience for participants in nature. The engagement and communications assistant will also support property stewards, a longer‑term volunteer program on select NCC‑managed properties.

The Engagement and Communications Assistant will also contribute to community engagement and outreach opportunities including booths at local events, trade shows, and/or special event days. Additionally, the assistants will create media assets (photo, video) and communications materials for public audiences.

The Engagement and Communications Assistant will also support the region’s communications work, contributing to writing, social media, and content creation that helps connect the public to NCC’s conservation work. This includes assisting with the development of digital content, gathering and organizing photos and media assets, and supporting routine administrative tasks such as asset management and digitization. The role combines hands‑on engagement with behind‑the‑scenes communications support to help ensure consistent, high‑quality outreach across multiple platforms.

This is an ideal position for students or graduates of Natural or Environmental Sciences who are interested in communications and the human side of conservation. The position offers a dynamic mix of hands‑on work, environmental communications, and public engagement.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The engagement and communications assistant will work closely with the Volunteer Program Manager and Communications Manager to:

  • Assist with planning, logistical coordination and delivery of up to 10 volunteer activities between May and September
  • Assist in the creation and implementation of volunteer property steward programming;
  • Work with staff to lead volunteers through hands‑on work…
