Position: First Year Apprentice Plumber (Entry Level – Voyageur Trades Program)

The Role

Position Summary

The Apprentice Plumber supports Journeyperson Plumbers across the Voyageur Trades Program shop, mobile unit, and community project sites as part of Rupertsland Institute’s Voyageur Trades Program. This entry-level role focuses on building foundational plumbing skills through hands-on learning, in-house instruction, and participation in community‑focused projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Journeyperson Plumbers with installing and repairing fixtures, piping, fittings, valves, drains, and water systems.
  • Support understanding of drain-waste-vent, and other basic plumbing layouts through practical and instructional learning.
  • Complete general labour duties including material handling, prep work, cleanup, and tool maintenance.
  • Participate in Voyageur Trades in-house training modules and follow all safety procedures as outlined by the Journeyperson Plumber.
  • Contribute labour to community-driven projects aligned with program mandates.
  • Maintain daily logs of hours, tasks, and skill development for apprenticeship progression.
  • Work effectively in a team environment, demonstrating professionalism, reliability, and respect.

    Qualifications

  • Must meet the minimum requirements to apprentice as a plumber, according to Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training, which includes but is not limited to:
    English 20-2 Math 20-3 Science 10, OR A pass mark in all 5 Canadian General Educational Development (GED) or Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) tests, or a combination of both GED and CAEC which comprise all 5 subjects
  • Interest in pursuing a plumbing trade career.
  • Ability to follow direction, work safely, and ask questions when needed.
  • Physical ability to lift materials, work indoors/outdoors, and perform job-site tasks.
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and clean Driver’s Abstract (required).
  • No prior plumbing experience required; construction or mechanical aptitude is an asset.
  • Commitment to teamwork and respectful engagement in Métis community projects.
  • Training & Development

  • Mentorship from certified Journeyperson Plumbers.
  • Structured in-house learning through Voyageur Trades.
  • Safety and job-readiness certifications provided as required.
  • Hour tracking aligned with Alberta Apprenticeship requirements.
  • Work Environment

  • Shops, mobile units, community project sites, and RLI facilities.
  • Requires travel and variable work conditions.
