Role Summary

Drill Rig Operators are responsible for safely and efficiently operating foundation drilling equipment including CFA, rotary, and down‑the‑hole rigs. They play a key role in production by ensuring piles are drilled to design specifications while maintaining strict adherence to safety, quality, and site procedures. Drill Rig Operators are expected to understand equipment limitations, coordinate effectively with their crew, and perform daily maintenance and inspection of their machines to ensure reliable operation in all ground conditions.

Core

Responsibilities
  • Operate foundation drilling equipment to construct piles in accordance with engineered drawings and specifications.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections, lubrication, and maintenance tasks; report mechanical issues immediately to the Foreman or Site Superintendent.
  • Ensure rig setup and positioning are completed safely and accurately, following lift plans and engineered layouts.
  • Monitor drilling parameters and adjust speed, pressure, and rotation to maintain pile quality.
  • Coordinate with the Pump Operator and Labourers during concrete or grout placement.
  • Ensure cages and reinforcement are installed according to design and verified before pour.
  • Maintain awareness of ground personnel and other equipment; communicate with spotters and crew during movement or repositioning.
  • Perform safe mobilization, assembly, and disassembly of drill rigs and tooling according to site procedures.
  • Record production data, pile depths, and soil conditions as required.
  • Maintain housekeeping of the rig, work pad, and laydown areas.
  • Participate in daily hazard assessments, toolbox meetings, and site safety briefings.
  • Suspend all activities that pose immediate risk to personnel, property, or the environment and report unsafe conditions promptly.
Technical Skills
  • Proficient in operating CFA, rotary, and down‑the‑hole drilling equipment.
  • Ability to identify and select proper tooling for varying ground conditions.
  • Knowledge of auger, Kelly bar, casing, and spin‑lock anchor systems.
  • Understanding of pile installation sequence and concrete/grout pumping coordination.
  • Familiar with safe rigging, hoisting, and lifting procedures.
  • Able to read and interpret pile layouts, drilling logs, and engineered drawings.
  • Competent in troubleshooting minor hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical issues.
  • Awareness of machine stability, ground bearing pressure, and safe travel paths.
  • Knowledge of lockout/tagout procedures and energy isolation during maintenance.
Interpersonal Skills
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to coordinate effectively with Foremen, Pump Operators, and Labourers.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, attention to detail, and commitment to quality.
  • Supports teamwork through knowledge sharing and mentoring less experienced workers.
  • Adaptable and calm under pressure, able to respond quickly to changing ground or weather conditions.
  • Dedicated to maintaining a safe and productive work environment.
Qualifications
  • Years of experience:
    Minimum 2 to 3 years operating foundation drilling equipment (CFA, rotary, or similar).
  • Education:

    High School or Equivalent.
  • Considered an asset:
    • Ground Disturbance Level 2
    • Rigging
    • Fall Protection
    • MEWP
    • First Aid
  • Physical fitness for high‑intensity tasks:
    • Lift up to 50 lbs.
  • This role includes tasks requiring respiratory protection. Employees must be clean‑shaven and fit‑tested for ½ or full non‑powered respirators, as per Provincial OHS Regulations and Hall OHS Policy.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including overtime and weekends as necessary to meet project deadlines.
