The Otipemisiwak Métis Government is seeking a First-Year Apprentice Carpenter to participate in the Voyageur Trades training program with the Education, Training, and Research Department, a hands‑on training opportunity designed to support Metis citizens in developing practical carpentry skills. The opportunity is offered as a part of the Voyageur Trades Program and applicants must meet the eligibility criteria for programs and services.
Reporting to the Manager, Voyageur Trades Program, the Apprentice Carpenter will support Journeyperson Carpenters in the delivery of framing, finishing, and construction tasks within the Voyageur Trades Program. This role will develop foundational carpentry skills through supervised project work, hands‑on instruction, and community‑based learning. This position will be a good fit for someone who has completed pre‑apprenticeship training or has started their path.
The Voyageur Trades Program will help you gain the hands‑on experience and hours that you may need to move forward. The successful Apprentice will work alongside Red Seal Journey persons, build real skills on real job sites, and be part of projects that support Métis communities.
- Assist with framing, formwork, finishing, installation of building materials, and operation of tools and equipment.
- Support layout preparation, measuring, cutting, and material handling activities.
- Complete general labour duties including material handling, prep work, cleanup, and tool maintenance.
- Participate in in‑house carpentry training through Voyageur Trades, as outlined by the Journeyperson Carpenter.
- Follow safety protocols and contribute to maintaining organized and safe work spaces.
- Contribute to community‑based builds and labour projects.
- Document daily tasks, learning progress, and hours toward apprenticeship status.
- Work respectfully and effectively in a team environment, demonstrating problem solving and reliability.
- Other duties as required or assigned.

- Familiarity with Requisition/Purchase Order software systems is an asset.
- Strong planning and organizational skills, with an ability to organize and prioritize daily tasks and long‑term objectives.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong relationships.
- Flexible and adaptable, with an ability to switch between multiple priorities.
- Commitment to teamwork and respectful engagement in Métis community projects.
- Ability to follow direction, work safely, and take initiative.
- Must meet the minimum requirements to apprentice as a carpenter, according to Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training, which includes but is not limited to:
- English 10-2
- Math 10-3, OR
- A pass mark in all 5 Canadian General Educational Development (GED) or Canadian Adult Education Credential (CAEC) tests, or a combination of both GED and CAEC which comprise all 5 subjects
- Physical ability to perform lifting, bending, climbing, and indoor/outdoor work.
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and clean Driver’s Abstract is required.
- No prior carpentry experience required; construction aptitude is an asset.
- Due to funding and program requirements, this position is open to Citizens of the Otipemisiwak Métis Government.
- As this is a training project, only applicants who meet the standard eligibility criteria for training projects offered by the Education, Training, and Research Department will be considered.
