TheSIUE University Museum
The University Museum of Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, founded in 1979, is a repository and interpretive center whose interdisciplinary collections include more than 40,000 two- and three-dimensional objects of fine art, architecture, history, ethnology, archaeology, and the natural sciences. Highlights of the collection include the Louis Sullivan Architectural Ornament Collection and the Harrington Collection of over 15,000 artifacts with strengths in Native American, Asian, and African ethnology, as well as fossils from Cenozoic through Paleozoic eras.
The museum plays a major role in creating an artistic and culturally diverse environment at SIUE through its policies and programming. Art and artifacts are installed throughout the campus and complement the mid-century modern architecture of the campus buildings. Museum collections are available for Faculty-supervised students' hands-on research and art projects providing unique opportunities for students to expand their horizons.
Internships and assistantships at the museum allow students to build a strong skills base for professional development in a wide variety of museum related careers and beyond. Additional outreach programming to regional educational facilities and non-profit museums and galleries provides opportunities for exposure to historical and cultural material for the wider community.
- Reporting to the Executive Curator, the position is responsible for the accurate execution of physical and intellectual collections management functions for the museum's collections of art and cultural heritage in accordance with established museum policies and procedures.
- Maintain physical and digital collections records and documentation for acquisitions, loans, deaccessions, transfers, inventories, and exhibitions. Process associated forms and records and coordinate routine communications with donors, lenders, borrowers, and vendors.
- Maintain location records, conduct inventories and condition assessments, and prepare documentation for loans, exhibitions, and transport.
- Support NAGPRA compliance through documentation, records review, inventory support, data preparation, and reporting. Assist with tribal consultations and related compliance documentation under supervision of senior museum staff and the NAGPRA Director.
- Maintain and improve collections database records and digital assets, including data entry, cleanup, reporting, and support for system updates and migration projects.
- Assist curatorial staff with exhibitions and Art-on-Campus works, with primary responsibility for registrarial support including object tracking, location control, condition documentation, and records management; prepare object labels, text panels, and support exhibition-related digital content.
