The Description
SUMMARYThe Communications Officer serves as the primary point of contact between the public and police officers. This position is responsible for receiving and prioritizing emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching appropriate police units, and maintaining communication with field personnel to ensure public safety and efficient response. The dispatcher must remain calm under pressure, make quick and accurate decisions, and operate a variety of communication and computer systems.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Answer emergency (911) and non-emergency calls in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner.
- Obtain and evaluate critical information from callers to determine the nature and priority of incidents.
- Dispatch police officers and other emergency personnel in response to calls for service.
- Maintain continuous communication with field units, providing updates, information, and support as necessary.
- Operate and monitor computer-aided dispatch (CAD) systems, radios, and other communication equipment.
- Access, enter, and retrieve information from local, state, and national law enforcement databases (e.g., NCIC).
- Monitor officer status and location to ensure safety and efficient deployment.
- Maintain accurate logs and records of calls, responses, and unit activity.
- Communicate with other agencies, such as fire departments, EMS, and neighboring law enforcement, to coordinate joint responses.
- Follow departmental policies, procedures, and protocols regarding emergency response and communications.
- Provide excellent customer service to the public, demonstrating patience, empathy, and professionalism.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability to type and enter information quickly and accurately.
- Strong multitasking skills, with the ability to listen, speak, and type simultaneously under pressure.
- Knowledge of geography of the jurisdiction or ability to quickly learn.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions in high-stress situations.
- High school diploma or equivalent (some agencies may require college coursework or degree).
- 9-1-1 Telecommunicators and Emergency Medical Dispatcher Certification required.
- Prior experience in emergency communications or law enforcement support preferred but not required.
