Systems Engineer II - ATS; Onsite

Overview

Collins Aerospace, an RTX company, is seeking a Systems Engineer II for the Air Traffic Solutions (ATS) team at the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center for Advanced Aerospace. This onsite role focuses on the development and support of the Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) to enhance national airspace safety.

• Support hardware engineering, software development, technical documentation, on‑site support, deployment, troubleshooting and software test for the STARS system.
• Work independently and collaboratively with a team to meet deadlines and deliver accurate, compliant solutions.
• Develop test reports and technical communication documents for team members, management and the customer.
• Possibility of software and hardware engineering work in new business pursuits.
• Participate in testing events, potentially during evenings and surge events.

• Work onsite at the FAA’s William J. Hughes Technical Center for Advanced Aerospace, working directly with our customers.
• Contribute to the cutting‑edge STARS air traffic control system, the backbone of air traffic management in the United States.
• Meet deadlines and provide accurate compliant solutions as an individual and team member.
• Drive innovation by developing creative solutions to customer challenges.
• Verify requirements by developing compliance artifacts and acceptance documentation.
• Create significant enhancements in the Air Traffic Control (ATC) systems.
• Support hardware and software development, including technical documentation, testing, enhancements, deployment, bug fixes, and troubleshooting.
• Occasional travel to other locations.

• In‑depth understanding of how traffic control systems operate and modernize to improve national airspace safety.
• Rigorous testing and documentation practices in a government contracting environment.
• Contributing to the next generation of airspace automation used by the FAA.

• Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 2 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree in a related field.
• Experience in Linux environments.
• U.S. citizenship (required).
• Capability to obtain a U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) clearance to access secure information under program/contract requirements.

• Prior experience in Air Traffic Control, Airspace/Aircraft Services, Technical Operations, or maintenance/development of Air Traffic Systems.
• Layer 2 and 3 networking knowledge (VLANs, STP, trunking, segmentation, routing protocols).
• Experience configuring and maintaining network hardware from vendors such as Extreme, Avaya, Cisco, Juniper, Arista, and Palo Alto.
• Programming skills in C, C++, Qt/Visual Studio, Python, or MATLAB.
• Experience with Jira, Jenkins, Clear Case, Git, or Bitbucket for configuration and workflow management.
• Experience with cloud‑based systems, containers, and virtual machines.
• Experience supporting a FAA government contract.
• Experience with Red Hat Linux 7/8/9.
• Experience with integration and test best practices.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.

$68,900 – $131,100 per year (based on experience and role).
