Recreation Specialist I Starting Salary: $16.32 Hourly
Recreation Specialist II Starting Salary: $18.46 Hourly
City of El Cajon is currently looking for dance instructors to teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced level classes to children through senior adults. The individual must be a strong role model and leader with strong experience in jazz, ballet, and/or tap. The ideal candidate would enjoy working as part of a team with other Recreation Specialists to provide a positive and successful learning environment.
ThePosition
As a Recreation Specialist Instructor, this position requires the ability to perform a full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Instructors receive instruction and/or assistance from the Recreation Supervisor and are expected to adjust when new or unusual situations arise. Independent judgment is required to select and apply the most appropriate guidelines and procedures, interpret precedents, and adopt standard methods or practices to meet variations in facts and/or conditions.
Instructors must have prior related experience and the ability to lead a class independently.
- Directing and supervising participants of the Recreation programs
- Plans, organizes, and instructs classes in their area of specialization within established guidelines
- Maintaining records pertinent to programs
- Implementing age‑appropriate activities and events
- Ensuring the health, welfare, and safety of the participants of the program
- Working closely with the Recreation Supervisor to ensure the success of programs through preparation, execution, and evaluation
- Assisting staff in organizing and cleaning facility areas and equipment
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with parents, community center staff, and other key individuals
- Maintaining a fun and positive attitude daily to create a happy environment for participants
- Other duties as assigned
- Knowledge of recreational activities
- Ability to be creative and innovative with recreation programs
- Possess excellent customer service and communication skills
- Ability to work with children and/or adults and give effective guidance to participants
- Ability to provide the necessary support to ensure the health and well‑being of all participants and staff
- Must be able to take direction as well as have the ability to take initiative
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
- Ability to evaluate emergency situations and act decisively and effectively to resolve them; communicate clearly, concisely, both orally and in writing
- Possess basic computer skills
- Requires a flexible work schedule that may require morning and evening hours, as well as weekends and holidays
Education: Educational achievement equivalent to completion of or currently attending high school. College‑level courses in recreation, education, physical education, or related field are desired. Additional training in area of specialization related to dance is preferred.
Experience: Some experience with recreation programming and leading activities for children and/or adults is desired. In addition, candidate must have some experience in their area of specialization, including background in preschool dance, jazz, modern, creative dance, and hip hop. Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to work with participants of all ages are required.
Special RequirementsAbility to obtain a CPR card and First Aid Certificate; may be required. Ability to provide means to commute between work sites during assigned shifts, including the use of personal vehicle. May be required to possess or have the ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid Class C California driver's license with a safe driving record. Ability to lift and move up to 20 lbs.

Part‑Time / Seasonal / Temporary Employees do not receive benefits other than participation in the appropriate retirement plan:
Nationwide or CalPERS. El Cajon is not a member of the Social Security System, but 1.45% of salary must be contributed to Medicare.
The City contributes 7.5% of employee salary to the Nationwide retirement plan in lieu of social security. Most Part‑Time / Seasonal / Temporary employees will be enrolled in this plan.
