Recreation Specialist II

Starting Salary: $18.46 Hourly

The City of El Cajon is currently looking for Skatepark instructors to teach beginning, intermediate, and advanced level skate, scooter and bike classes to children in the Kennedy Skatepark. The individual must be a strong role model/leader with strong experience in skateboarding, scooter riding, and/or biking. The ideal candidate would enjoy working as part of a team, with other Recreation Specialists, to provide a positive, successful, and safe learning environment.

Overview

As a Recreation Specialist Instructor, this position requires the ability to perform a full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. Recreation Specialist Instructors receive instruction and/or assistance from the Recreation Supervisor and are able to adjust when new or unusual situations arise. They must have the ability to lead a class independently and have prior related experience.

Typical Duties
  • Directing and supervising participants of the Recreation programs
  • Spotting participants and understanding the importance of and following existing skills progressions
  • Planning, organizing, and instructing classes within established guidelines
  • Maintaining records pertinent to programs
  • Implementing age-appropriate activities and events
  • Ensuring the health, welfare, and safety of program participants
  • Working closely with the Recreation Supervisor to ensure program success through preparation, execution, and evaluation
  • Assisting staff in organizing and cleaning facility areas and equipment
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with parents, community staff, and other key individuals
  • Maintaining a fun and positive attitude daily to create a happy environment for participants
  • Other duties as assigned

  • Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
  • Ability to evaluate emergency situations and act decisively to resolve them, communicating clearly and concisely both orally and in writing
  • Basic computer skills
  • Flexible work schedule that may require morning and evening hours, as well as weekends and holidays
Education

Educational achievement equivalent to completion or current enrollment of high school. College-level courses in recreation, education, physical education, or related field are desired. Additional training in skateboarding, scooter riding, and/or biking is preferred.

Experience

Some experience with recreation programming and leading activities for children and/or adults is desired. Candidates must have experience in their area of specialization, including background in skateboarding, scooter riding, and/or biking. Strong interpersonal skills and a desire to work with participants of all ages are required.

Special Requirements
  • Ability to obtain a CPR card and First Aid Certificate. May be required.
  • Ability to commute between work sites during assigned shifts; may be required to use a personal vehicle. If required, a valid Class C California driver's license with a safe driving record is necessary.
  • Ability to lift and move up to 20 lbs.

Nationwide or CalPERS. El Cajon is not a member of the Social Security System, but 1.45% of salary must be contributed to Medicare. Nationwide Retirement Plan:
The City contributes 7.5% of employee salary to the Nationwide retirement plan in lieu of Social Security. Eligible employees will be enrolled.
