JOB TITLE: Garden Manager

FSLA STATUS: Exempt/Full Time

Hours: Monday through Friday; 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.; occasional Saturday

RESPONSIBLE TO: Director of Programming

SUPERVISES: Garden staff, support persons, volunteers and others as assigned.

BASIC FUNCTIONS
  • Perform duties under the direct supervision of the Director of Programming and Executive Director. Work collaboratively with Director of Programming, Development team and Executive Director.
  • Establish working relationships with vendors, customers and community outreach.
  • Work Saturdays if needed and provide supervision of staff who assist on weekends. Support off‑hours events when asked.
  • Exempt employees are expected to work irregular/extended hours as deemed necessary.
  • Maintain a safe working environment.
  • Capable of being self‑motivated and working independently when directly unsupervised.
  • Responsible for compliance of SMSC’s policies and procedures and maintain proper program confidentiality.
  • Understand that as an SMSC employee you must present yourself in a professional manner, with the agency’s best interest in mind, when acting as a representative of St. Madeleine Sophie’s Center.
  • Responsible to report any documented or suspected unlawful discrimination, harassment or suspected abuse through proper channels.
  • Attend all staff meetings and individual meetings as scheduled.
  • Ability to submit written reports as needed.
  • Exhibit an ability to be flexible within your job description that may include working irregular hours.
  • Follow all applicable laws, rules and regulations pertaining to Title 17 and Title 22 of the State of California.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Play a vital role in the development of a business/marketing plan in garden retail.
  • Develop a purchasing/planting calendar in collaboration with garden instructors, garden lead.
  • Maintain the sales house at all times; to include ordering plants and garden items for special events/holidays, pricing, display design and organization of the garden kiosk.
  • Conduct garden tours, assist in the planning of special Saturday garden events and schedule demonstrations as needed.
  • Ensure all aspects of garden retail and garden are maintained within safety guidelines and agricultural standards.
  • Assure licensing and certifications related to the garden (nursery, organic, and certified producers) are maintained and kept up-to-date.
  • Expand community contacts, widen customer base and increase garden visibility.
  • Directly supervise developmentally disabled individuals participating in the Work Activity and Activity Center Programs who are scheduled in the garden.
  • Design plant/flower arrangements for event specific occasions as well as making contacts and follow through including creation of invoices, customer service etc.
  • Determine event/holiday/seasonal specific sales in the garden in collaboration with the Director of Programming and Executive Director.
  • Maintain the garden sales in Administration building’s lobby during seasonal sales etc. Work closely with Development in preparation of events that relate to garden revenue building and seasonal sales.
  • Accommodate requests that may come from Administration and Development on short notice.
  • Interact with visitors, customers and vendors in a professional manner and routine basis.
  • Keep accurate records of sales and track product inventory.
  • Manage or assign retail aspects of the garden at special events that are campus-based as well as those scheduled throughout the year in the community.
  • Assure that consumer’s individual ISP goals relating to the garden are implemented and documented.
  • Maintain confidentiality related to management discussions, decisions and HIPAA regulations.
  • Assist in the development and lead implementation of garden outcome objectives.
  • Orient and manage garden volunteers.
  • Oversee the daily operations of the garden and provide customer service during program hours.
  • Ensure all programs, Regional Center, CARF and Agriculture department standards, CCL and other applicable requirements are maintained.
  • Oversee the development, implementation and structure of garden curriculum.
  • Write and conduct garden staff annual reviews.
