Recruitment will fill Recreation Specialist I vacancies at all Recreation Centers and Facilities:
Bostonia, Fletcher Hills Center & Pool, Hillside, Kennedy Center & Skatepark, Renette, Mobile Outdoor Rec Squad, and Ronald Reagan.
Part‑time temporary position. Starting Salary: $16.32 hourly.
The City of El Cajon is looking for enthusiastic team players who enjoy leading activities, games, sports, arts & crafts, and special events for youth and the community.
PositionAs a Recreation Specialist I, you will perform a full range of duties independently, exercising judgment and initiative. You will receive instruction from Recreation Specialist II’s or Operations Directors and adapt to new or unusual situations while following operating procedures and policies.
Typical Duties- Directing and supervising participants of Recreation programs
- Ensuring the health, welfare, and safety of participants
- Working closely with Recreation Specialist II’s to prepare, execute, and evaluate programs
- Assisting staff in organizing and cleaning facility areas and equipment
- Establishing and maintaining relationships with parents, community center staff, and other key individuals
- Maintaining a fun and positive attitude daily to create a happy environment for participants
- Other duties as assigned
Skills & Qualifications
- Knowledge of recreational activities, games, sports, arts & crafts
- Creative and innovative approach to recreation programs
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Ability to work with children and/or adults and provide effective guidance to center patrons
- Ability to support the health and well‑being of all participants and staff
- Willingly take direction while also exercising initiative
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships
- Basic computer skills
- Flexible schedule, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays
Education: Completion of or current attendance at high school.
Experience: Desired experience with recreation programming and leading activities for children and/or adults.
Special Requirements: Ability to obtain a CPR card and First Aid Certificate; may be required to provide a means of commute between work sites. Must possess a valid Class C California driver’s license with a safe driving record and be able to lift up to 20 lbs.
BenefitsThis position is part‑time / seasonal / temporary and does not receive benefits other than participation in the appropriate retirement plan:
Nationwide or CalPERS. The City contributes 7.5% of salary to the Nationwide retirement plan in lieu of Social Security. Eligible part‑time employees qualify for CalPERS pensions starting January 2013.
