Position: Court Interpreter (Part-Time)

This position is part-time. Part‑time schedule may be determined by mutual agreement.

About the Position

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, provide verbal interpretations of questions, testimony, arguments and other courtroom proceedings for defendants, judges, counsel, jurors, witnesses and others; sight translation of written materials and legal documents in the courtroom.

Essential Duties

Provide verbal and written interpretations in the courtroom setting, including sight translation of legal documents as required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to the requirements set by the State of California for a Certified Court Interpreter.
  • Valid Court Interpreter Certification from the Judicial Council of California.
  • A valid California Class C driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the Court's vehicle insurance policy.
Knowledge of
  • Correct oral and written usage of English and a designated second language.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Legal procedures and terminology.
  • Simultaneous, consecutive and sight translation techniques.
  • Translation of street language including slang, profanity and colloquialisms.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Code of ethics and rules of confidentiality applicable to interpreting.
Abilities
  • Interpret verbal court proceedings including questions, testimony, arguments, and other audible exchanges in a court of law.
  • Provide sight translation of written materials including reports, letters, legal documents and other items.
  • Travel to branch courts to interpret proceedings for non‑English speaking defendants.
  • Read, write, translate and interpret English and a designated second language.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
  • Stand in court for extended periods of time.
  • Provide clear and accurate translations and interpretations of superior court proceedings.
Benefits and Compensation
  • Part‑time, non‑exempt hourly position with biweekly paydays.
  • Health Insurance is available at a shared cost. The Court subsidizes a percentage of the medical premium; the employee is responsible for the remaining cost. Coverage also available for registered domestic partners and eligible dependents at the employee's expense.
  • Vision and Dental Insurance are optional and paid by the employee.
  • Basic life insurance of $20,000.00 is paid by the Court. Optional supplemental life and dependent insurance are available at the employee's expense.
  • Long Term Disability Insurance is available at the employee's expense.
  • Worker's Compensation is paid by the Court.
  • State Disability Insurance is paid by employee at 1% rate up to $101,636 in wages.
  • Deferred Compensation (457(b) Plan) is available at the employee's expense.
  • Employee Assistance Program is paid by the Court.
  • Tuition Reimbursement up to $1,200 per calendar year subject to pre‑approval and availability of funds.
  • Retirement: ICERS – Employee/Employer contributions rates are available at the ICERS website.
  • Paid holidays: 14 paid holidays per year.

Leave Provisions
  • Sick leave is accrued at a rate of .0500 per hour paid based on a maximum of 80 hours per pay period. Maximum amount accrued per pay period is 4 hours.
  • Vacation time is accrued based on years of service, capped at 240 hours. Accrual rates are:
    • 0–60 months (0–5 years): .038462 per hour worked (10 days per year).
    • 60–120 months (5–10 years): .057690 per hour worked (15 days per year).
    • 120–180 months (10–15 years): .069230 per hour worked (18 days per year).
    • 180–240 months (15–20 years): .080760 per hour worked (21 days per year).
    • Over 240 months (20+ years): .088460 per hour worked (23 days per year); capped at 320 hours.
  • Jury leave is paid at employee's regular rate of pay by the court. Employee retains mileage or expense reimbursement only.
  • Military Leave provided in accordance with the law.
  • Bereavement leave: 9 days per rolling 12 months.
