Position: Custodian I Graffiti Program
SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs a variety of duties to maintain buildings, offices and other assigned areas in a clean, orderly, safe and secure manner. Performs minor maintenance and repair of buildings and grounds. Removal and prevention of graffiti on public property, City facilities, and other designated locations; performs related responsibilities as required.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Receives supervision from the assigned supervisor.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.

  • Dusts and polishes furniture and woodwork.
  • Sweeps, mops, polishes and waxes floors; vacuums and shampoos carpets.
  • Empties and cleans wastebaskets.
  • Cleans, scrubs and disinfects restrooms; cleans sinks, mirrors and other bathroom fixtures; refills dispensers with appropriate soap and paper products.
  • Maintains custodial equipment and materials; maintains various restroom supplies including paper products, soap and related items; requests additional materials according to established procedures.
  • Turns off lights, sets alarms and locks offices as needed.
  • Picks up trash and other debris from grounds and buildings.
  • Cleans walls and door facings; washes windows and blinds; removes cobwebs and dust from ceilings and other high places.
  • Reports burned out lights and replaces light bulbs.
  • Sets up facilities in preparation of scheduled events and activities.
  • Assists in facilities inspections.
  • Reports damage or unsafe conditions to assigned supervisor.
  • Paints and may perform general carpentry work related to buildings and fixtures.
  • May perform occasional trimming of plants and trees.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Respond promptly to reports of graffiti on public buildings, park facilities, walls, signage, and other surfaces.
  • Removes graffiti using various methods including painting, chemicals solvent, pressure washing, and sandblasting.
  • Conduct routine patrols of City facilities and parks to identify and report new graffiti.
  • Install anti-graffiti coatings or deterrent materials as needed.

The preceding activities have been provided as examples of the types of work performed by positions assigned to this job classification. The City reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind work assignments as needed.

Requirements
  • High school diploma from an accredited school or U.S. equivalent.
  • One (1) year of general building cleaning and maintenance experience.
  • Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
KNOWLEDGE,

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of building maintenance and repair procedures.
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods.
  • Knowledge of cleaning materials, disinfectants, equipment and tools for minor maintenance used in custodial work.
  • Knowledge of proper safety standards and facility user rules and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic electrical and plumbing principles.
  • Knowledge of safe and effective use of graffiti removal tools and chemicals.
  • Knowledge of surface preparation and painting techniques.
  • Ability to set up and move tables, chairs, bleachers, partitions and the like.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with other employees, children, community users using tact, courtesy and good judgment.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, policies and procedures under routine and emergency situations.
  • Ability to physically perform assigned duties.
