Position: PHRM004 FT Pharmacy Tech I

This position is responsible for the accurate assistance of pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care to both in-patients and out-patients. Computer entry and processing of patient drug orders; sterile and non-sterile preparations of liquids and solid dosage forms; care and ordering of supplies and equipment; training of trainees; processing of admittance, discharge and transfer of patient drugs; performing miscellaneous related tasks.

Qualifications/Experience

Education:

Must possess a high school diploma or GED equivalent and exhibit proficiency in patient care and oral communication skills. The Arkansas Board of Pharmacy must license the candidate, which is contingent upon becoming certified by the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) within 1 year of employment. The candidate also has to successfully complete the sterile products training curriculum mandated by the Arkansas Board of Pharmacy within 6 months of starting employment.

Experience:

Desirable characteristics include a proficiency in written and verbal communications, mathematical calculations, typing of not less than 40 words per minute, computer literate, possess ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with the public; and an ability to perform within time frame without loss of accuracy. Must be able to follow directions and to perform work according to department standards when no directions are given.

Must be emotionally mature and able to function effectively under stress.

Licenses/Certificate:

Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT), Arkansas Board of Pharmacy licensure, successful completion of the Arkansas Sterile Products Training course (20 hrs CE).

Must follow and enforce accepted safety practices for patients and SARH.

Must report hazards and initiate appropriate action.

Must participate in safety instructional programs.

Assist pharmacist within legal guidelines. Undertakes tasks that develop from the workflow without having to be asked.

Fills Pyxis medications in an accurate and timely fashion.

When performing as IV tech, wears appropriate attire, prepares IV solutions accurately and aseptically, stocks IV room and IV storage shelves, documents all cleaning of hoods and floors, documents refrigerator temperature, keeps anteroom sink clean, keeps IV anteroom uncluttered and orderly.

Able to perform basic Pyxis functions necessary to accomplish all technician tasks: medication station refill, discrepancy resolution, failed drawer recovery, rebooting, inventory, accurate use of CII safe, etc.

Able to perform all ordering, receiving, unpacking, and storing of pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.

Training of trainees, when asked by Director of Pharmacy. Uses one-to-one training techniques; assure growth of other in the pharmacy.

Possesses a positive attitude toward the policy & procedures of the hospital, department, and decisions made by management.

Able to demonstrate sterile and non-sterile extemporaneous preparation of liquids & solids through the proper use of equipment and techniques; accurately individualize the doses of medication dispensed to the patients.
