Basic Function
HF Sinclair's refinery in El Dorado, Kansas, is seeking a Shift Foreman to lead the operating workforce within an assigned area with minimal supervision. The role oversees safe production operations and environmental compliance during assigned shifts, ensures oil flow plans and production targets are achieved, prepares equipment for scheduled maintenance, and facilitates seamless handoffs between shifts. This position also supports operational continuity and contributes to the refinery's long‑term goals.
Job Duties- Oversee all aspects of plant operations on shift for assigned area.
- Give work direction to operators on shift, directing all operators during startups, shutdowns and emergencies.
- Evaluate operator job performance and provide consistent coaching and discipline as appropriate.
- Approve and issue work orders when required.
- Ensure unit operates within environmental, health and safety compliance; identify potential unit problems and take action to prevent incidents; report any environmental incidents to HES and appropriate supervision.
- Initiate incident investigation activities, including statement collection during assigned shift.
- Review product quality with assigned crews to ensure quality products are made and daily oil flow targets are met; coordinate troubleshooting to solve operating problems.
- Ensure operators perform PM/Pump Rotations and area equipment is ready for planned maintenance; support resolution of process and mechanical issues.
- Confirm crew compliance with operating procedures and record on‑shift event documentation in unit logbook; maintain organized filing system to keep up‑to‑date records, complete reports, schedules, etc., on time and accurately; monitor inventories of supplies and reorder as necessary.
- Take responsibility that certification and other training metrics are met, MOCs reviewed, rounds completed and documented, procedures reviewed and followed, and other key shift performance metrics met.
- Minimize costs for running area, taking action on or giving suggestions to supervision on cost‑saving opportunities, optimizing cost efficiency, and developing and implementing opportunities to control/reduce overtime.
- Train shift organization in the impact of their area’s unit operation on other parts of their area; develop bench strength through technical and soft skill coaching.
- Facilitate decision making at the right level in the organization; encourage unit‑level ability and accountability to make “right‑level” decisions and create a feedback loop of effectiveness of those decisions.
A minimum of 5 years of refinery operations background and general knowledge of maintenance protocol is required.
Preferred ExperienceSupervisory, step‑up and/or Special Assignment experience.
Education LevelA minimum of a High School Diploma is required.
Required SkillsAbility to direct and acquire work from a number of resources without direct supervisory responsibility; optimize production by identifying and solving operational problems within assigned area; handle high‑visibility projects and activities, high‑pressure situations, and long hours while maintaining a positive and constructive attitude; communicate effectively with others through written and verbal communication; constructively interact with all levels of staff including engineers, operators, shift and maintenance personnel;
possess intermediate computer, reading, writing and mathematical skills.
Responsible for the direct supervision of up to 40 employees.
Work ConditionsOffice and refinery/industrial environment based with up to 5% travel by land and air. Work occurs in petroleum refinery, warehouse/plant, outdoor, and driver‑based environments, including but not limited to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, and rotating equipment. Subject to all weather, temperature, and varying road conditions. Occasional weekend and after‑hour call‑outs and confined‑space work may be required.
