Position Summary
:
Under the supervision of the Sergeant, the Patrol Officer performs general law enforcement duties in the protection of life and property within Butler County. Work involves patrolling county areas, enforcing all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances, securing compliance with traffic violations and making investigations at the scene of a crime or traffic accident. Work in this position involves an element of personal danger.
The employee in this position must be able to act without direct supervision and to exercise independent judgment in handling emergencies.
- Answers a variety of calls and complaints involving automobile accidents, robberies, domestic disturbances and other misdemeanors and felonies;
- Arrests individuals who violate laws and ordinances;
- Completes reports and records;
- Conducts investigations and gathers evidence;
- Contacts witnesses and makes arrests;
- Enforces all federal, state, and local laws and ordinances;
- Patrols county and related areas to preserve law andorder;
- Performs duties of warrant, detention, transport, and court deputies; asneeded;
- Serves as contract deputy for a city in Butler County which encompasses all roadpatrolfunctions; provides security for municipal court and city council as requested;
- Serves on a special assignment as DARE officer and Community Resource Officer, as needed;
- Serves on a special assignment as Field Training Officer, asneeded;
- Serves on a special assignment on the Emergency Response Team, asneeded;
- Receives and answers complaints and requests from the general public;
- Testifies in court or related activities;
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary or as required.

Certificate, License
:
Valid driver's license. Certification through the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center within one year of employment.
Required Education and/or
Experience:
Three to six months related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D. and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Employee is expected to have acquired the necessary information and skills to perform the job reasonably well after six months in the position. No prior law enforcement experience of minimal experience. 40 hours of continuing education annually.
Preferred Education and/or Experience
:
Six months to twelve months related experience, High School Diploma or G.E.D. and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's;
- Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively recognizing actual or potential dangers, and determine proper course ofaction;
- Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry;
- Abilitytocalculatefiguresandamountssuchasdiscounts,interest,commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, andvolume;
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions;
- Abilitytoeffectivelypresentinformationandrespondtoquestionsfromgroupsof managers, clients, customers, and the general public;
- Abilitytoestablishandmaintaineffectiveworkingrelationshipswithcoworkers,Local, State and Federal officers, groups, and with citizens from varied racial, ethnic or economic backgrounds;
- Ability to have good communication abilities;
- Abilitytointerpretanextensivevarietyoftechnicalinstructionsinmathematicalor diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables;
