Shift Foreman

Overview

HF Sinclair's refinery in El Dorado, Kansas is seeking a Shift Foreman to lead the operating workforce within an assigned area with minimal supervision. This role is responsible for overseeing safe production operations and environmental compliance during assigned shifts, while providing strong leadership and effective human resource management to build bench strength within the crew. The Shift Supervisor ensures oil flow plans and production targets are achieved, equipment is properly prepared for scheduled maintenance activities, and plant operations are handed off between shifts through clear and effective communication.

By coordinating closely with counterparts, this position helps ensure operational continuity and supports the refinery’s long-term organizational goals.

• Oversees all aspects of plant operations on shift for the assigned area
• Directs operators during startups, shutdowns and emergencies and provides work direction on shift
• Evaluates operator performance and provides coaching and appropriate discipline
• May approve and issue work orders
• Ensures compliance with environmental, health and safety requirements; identifies potential issues and takes action to prevent incidents; reports environmental incidents to HES and supervision
• Initiates incident investigation activities including statement collection during the assigned shift
• Reviews product quality with crews to ensure quality products and daily oil flow targets are met; coordinates troubleshooting of operating problems
• Ensures PM/pump rotations are performed and area is ready for maintenance as planned; supports resolution of process and mechanical issues
• Ensures crew compliance with operating procedures; maintains on-shift event documentation in the unit logbook; keeps organized filing, completes reports and schedules on time; monitors inventories and reorders as necessary
• Ensures training metrics are met, MOC reviews completed, rounds documented, procedures followed, and other key shift performance metrics met
• Minimizes costs for the running area; supports cost-saving opportunities and overtime control
• Trains shift organization on the impact of their area’s unit operation to other parts of the area; builds bench strength through coaching
• Facilitates decision making at the appropriate level and fosters accountability within the unit

• Minimum of 5 years of refinery operations experience and general knowledge of maintenance protocols
• Preferred experience:
  
  Supervisory, step-up and/or Special Assignment experience
• Ability to direct and coordinate work from multiple resources in the absence of direct supervisory authority
• Strong problem solving, communication, and teamwork skills; ability to work under pressure and long hours

High school diploma required

Ability to direct and acquire work from multiple resources; optimize production by solving operational problems; handle high-visibility projects and long hours with a positive attitude; effective written and verbal communication; ability to interact with engineers, operators, and maintenance staff; intermediate computer, reading/writing, and mathematical skills.

Direct supervision of up to 40 employees.

Office and refinery/industrial environment with up to 5% travel. Exposure to chemicals, pressure vessels, tanks, rotating equipment; weather conditions; occasional weekend and after-hour call-outs; confined spaces.

Standing, walking, sitting, twisting, stooping, crouching, kneeling, lifting up to 50 lbs, pushing/pulling up to 25 lbs, climbing up to 150 ft; ability to operate company vehicles with valid license and insurance; PPE as required; routine heavy physical activity.
