Senior Surveyor
Location: Fontana or El Monte, CA
Classification: Full-Time | Direct Hire
Schedule: 9/80 Schedule, 7:00 AM - 5:00 PM
Compensation: $110,000 - $150,000 annually, dependent on qualifications.
We are supporting a Senior Land Surveyor opportunity for a California-licensed professional with deep technical expertise in boundary determination, mapping, construction support, and asset management. This role operates under the general direction of the Planning Manager and is responsible for overseeing survey operations that support land survey, right-of-way, utility, and asset management needs.
This position requires independent ownership, technical judgment, and the ability to lead survey execution from research through final deliverables.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare, review, and revise survey maps, plats, exhibits, and alignment drawings, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and completeness.
- Compile and analyze data required for map preparation, including aerial photography, survey notes, records, reports, calculations, and original mapping.
- Verify accuracy and completeness of real property and right-of-way documents, including deeds, easements, plats, title reports, and legal descriptions.
- Research and compile federal, state, county, and city records related to rights-of-way, easements, and property boundaries.
- Prepare or supervise preparation of survey charts, plots, maps, records, and documentation required for survey projects.
- Write legal descriptions for boundary surveys used in deeds and other legal property documents.
- Direct or personally conduct boundary surveys based on deeds and titles to establish legal property limits.
- Direct or conduct topographic surveys to capture landform and existing feature data for engineering and design use.
- Direct or conduct construction staking to support both linear and vertical construction activities.
- Perform detailed research of legal records, survey records, and land titles related to property boundaries and easements.
- Utilize, maintain, adjust, and calibrate surveying instruments to ensure accuracy and operational readiness.
- Coordinate survey findings with engineering design and construction management teams to ensure alignment with project requirements.
- Manage and coordinate with external survey consultants, including aerial survey providers, as required.
- Assist with the development, maintenance, and management of asset inventories and records.
- Maintain asset data within hierarchical databases to support planning, lifecycle management, and regulatory compliance.
- Collect and coordinate asset operation, performance, service, and retirement criteria in alignment with industry standards and CPUC requirements.
- Develop and document survey methods and procedures for training and standardization.
- Train and direct internal engineering and survey staff performing field surveys or drafting activities.
- Operate CADD workstations to produce engineering survey drawings, including horizontal and vertical alignments, layouts, profiles, assemblies, and related documentation.
- Compile data and perform dimensional and routine calculations necessary for survey drawing preparation.
- Interpret and read orthographic 2D and related survey drawings accurately.

Required Knowledge and Technical Expertise:
- Land surveying principles and practices, including survey law.
- Real property documentation, including vesting deeds, legal descriptions, easements, exhibits, and title reports.
- Horizontal and vertical coordinate systems, including State Plane Coordinate Systems, UTM, NAD
83, NAD
27, NAVD
88, and NGVD
29. - Field survey and engineering methods and techniques.
- Civil engineering and survey terminology, maps, plat drawings, and specifications.
- Mathematics, including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering with a concentration in Geospatial Sciences, required.
- California Professional Land Surveyor (PLS) license, required.
- Eight (8) or more years of hands-on experience in survey instrumental operations and survey map preparation.
- Valid California driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Drone-based survey experience.
- Familiarity with ESRI Utility Database systems.
