Alcala CPA PLLC is a growing small-business tax and accounting firm looking for an experienced, independent Tax Manager to take over technical review and sign-off on client returns and work papers. This is a high-trust, high-autonomy role for someone who wants ownership of the technical side of the practice — not a role that comes with a stack of unrelated administrative duties bolted on.
Aboutthe Firm
We're a small business-focused CPA firm built around reasonable hours and a real growth track. We believe in giving experienced people the autonomy to own their work rather than micromanaging every return. As the firm grows, there is a genuine path toward partner-track / equity participation for the right person who wants to build something long-term with us.
The RoleYou will be the firm's technical backstop — the final check between staff-prepared returns/work papers and the client. You'll work directly with our founder to take full ownership of quality control, freeing him to focus on client relationships and firm growth rather than day-to-day review.
What You'll Do- Perform final technical review and sign-off on small business tax returns and work papers prepared by staff accountants
- Serve as the go-to technical resource for staff questions, so preparers aren't waiting on the owner for answers
- Own quality control across the firm — catch errors and patterns before returns go out the door
- Provide feedback and mentorship to junior/mid-level preparers as trust and track record build
- Work independently — you'll be trusted to make the call and flag only what truly needs the owner's input
- CPA required (or EA with strong, demonstrated small-business tax experience)
- Several years of hands‑on review experience with small business tax returns and bookkeeping — not just individual returns
- A track record of working independently, with sound judgment and minimal oversight
- Prior experience at a firm of similar size (6–15 people) is a plus
- Comfort giving direct, constructive feedback to preparers
- Reasonable hours — we are not a grind-it-out firm
- A real path to partner-track / equity for the right long‑term fit
- Autonomy — this role has genuine review authority, not a rubber stamp
- A firm actively investing in the right people as it grows
