Overview:

The Department of Medical Education at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso (TTUHSC El Paso), Paul L. Foster School of Medicine (PLFSOM), invites applications for a full-time, open-rank faculty position in anatomy. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, interdisciplinary team of medical educators to develop and deliver a highly integrated, clinical presentation-based medical curriculum. Faculty also engage in research and service activities aligned with their interests, expertise, and experience.

The Department of Medical Education houses several state-of-the-art educational spaces, including a 5,000-square-foot gross anatomy laboratory for medical student teaching and research. The department also manages a regional willed body program that supports anatomical education and research across West Texas and Southern New Mexico. In addition to contributing to the core medical curriculum, anatomy faculty lead the Distinction in Anatomy program, a merit-based pathway for students interested in anatomy-intensive specialties, as well as a well-enrolled fourth-year surgical anatomy elective.

Faculty have access to a 2,700-square-foot molecular and cell biology laboratory dedicated to faculty-mentored student research. Additional instrumentation and collaborative expertise are available through four centers of research emphasis (Cancer, Diabetes & Metabolism, Infectious Diseases, and Neuroscience) within the adjacent Department of Molecular and Translational Medicine.

It consistently ranks as one of the safest large cities in the country and offers excellent schools and family-friendly amenities. With over 300 days of sunshine annually, the region offers a wide range of outdoor and cultural activities. The Franklin Mountains State Park, one of the largest urban parks in the U.S., offers convenient access to hiking, mountain biking, rock climbing, and camping.

The city is also home to an international airport, Fort Bliss, the Sun Bowl, Division I athletics, historic sites, museums, minor league baseball, professional soccer, Broadway series, symphony, and a classic film festival.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Anatomy or a closely related discipline, or M.D./D.O. or equivalent medical degree
  • Experience in teaching human gross anatomy, especially clinically-integrated anatomy for medical students
  • Evidence of scholarship in the field of expertise
  • Texas Medical License or eligibility for Texas Medical License for physician candidates
  • Board certification by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties for physician candidates
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience teaching human embryology, especially clinically-integrated embryology for medical students
  • Experience using medical imaging and clinical case-based scenarios in the teaching of human anatomy and embryology
  • Experience developing and delivering an integrated medical curriculum
  • Experience with active learning methods, such as interactive large and small group formats, laboratory-based instruction, team-based learning, case-based learning, and problem-based learning
  • Experience with curriculum management software systems
  • Participation in national organizations or committees devoted to medical education
  • Experience in medical education scholarship
  • Experience in the development of grant proposals and the management of extramural funding
  • Emerging or established regional or national reputation for associate professor or higher rank
Position

Description:

  • Participates in the collaborative development and delivery of the pre-clerkship medical school curriculum (years 1-2), with an emphasis on curricular elements related to the teaching and assessment of human anatomy
  • Participates in course administration and instruction for the pre-clerkship phase of the medical school curriculum
  • Collaborates with faculty members in other disciplines to develop and deliver an integrated curriculum that blends basic science, clinical science, and health systems science
  • Employs a variety of teaching methods including laboratory-based instruction, case-based instruction, large- and small-group discussion, lecture, demonstration, simulation, and team-based learning
  • Provides formative and summative assessment of medical student performance
  • Provides individual support, feedback, and advice to medical students
  • Works closely with course and curriculum committees, fellow faculty, and key administrators to accomplish the educational program goals and objectives established by the School of Medicine
  • Engages in advancement of scientific knowledge through research and/or scholarship
  • Provides clinical service (when applicable) to the extent necessary to adequately support the teaching programs of the department
