Position: Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Army Instructor

Assist the Senior Army Instructor (SAI) to lead, manage, and conduct the JROTC academic and co‑curricular program on a high‑school campus according to district, school and Army policies and regulations. Adhere to federal and state laws, as well as district policies, procedures and regulations.

Essential Functions
  • Prepare and implement weekly training schedules/lesson plans that fulfill the JROTC curriculum requirements in conjunction with the JROTC Senior Army Instructor. Prepare lesson plans that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles and instructional needs with consistent and high levels of student engagement.
  • Use the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) as the instructional objectives to plan teaching and present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, Board policies, administrative regulations, and JROTC guidelines and curriculum.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and instructional needs of students assigned. Help students analyze and improve study methods and habits.
  • In conjunction with the SAI, implement the JROTC academic curriculum using the latest versions of the JROTC Curriculum Manager, Classroom Performance System and other related technology.
  • In conjunction with the SAI, implement a robust and varied co‑curricular program that supports the academic curriculum and the school.
  • Conduct a public affairs effort within the school and the community to further an understanding of JROTC, the school, and the Army.
  • Enroll students in JROTC and support school officials and the JROTC Senior Army Instructor while executing the curriculum and the integrated extracurricular activities: competitive drill, physical fitness, marksmanship, color guard and other teams as well as community service projects, honor guards, and the JROTC summer program, JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenges (JCLC).
  • Assist the SAI to maintain a minimum JROTC enrollment of 100 cadets or 10% of the student body.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers to modify curricula as needed for special education students according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Work cooperatively with other instructional program teachers that impact assigned students to determine instructional goals, objectives and methods according to district requirements.
  • Assist the Senior Army Instructor in their duty as the central point of contact for military affairs on campus related to college and career readiness, service academy nominations, Senior ROTC university scholarships, enlistments, liaison with community veteran organizations, flag protocol, and significant days of remembrance.
  • Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social and emotional development of students.
  • Ensure JROTC unit areas are neat and orderly.
  • Assist the SAI to maintain accountability of all school district and U.S. government property.
Communication
  • Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, principals, colleagues and community members.
  • Conduct frequent conferences with parents, students, teachers and principals to ensure all student achievement is discussed and communicated.
  • Use clear, effective and professional communication.
  • Maintain a booster club and/or encourage parents and family members to register as YISD volunteers and actively support the JROTC program on their campus.
Student Growth and Development
  • Provide formative and summative assessment of student achievement and use results to provide feedback and plan instructional activities.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the campus principal taking all safety precautions.
  • Faithfully represent the military profession, be a positive role model for students, and support the goals and mission of the campus and school district.
