The Mariachi Coach directs, instructs, and develops the mariachi music program. The role involves teaching students technical skills, cultural history, and performance practices of traditional mariachi music. The coach leads rehearsals, selects repertoire, arranges music, and prepares student ensembles for school performances, community events, and competitions.

• Provide high-quality instruction in traditional mariachi instruments: violín, trompeta, guitarrón, vihuela, guitarra, and vocal technique.
• Teach music theory, sight‑reading, ear training, and standard mariachi performance techniques.
• Select, arrange and adapt age‑appropriate repertoire representing various mariachi styles.
• Conduct regular rehearsals, balancing group ensemble work with sectional instruction.

• Coordinate, schedule and direct public performances, school assemblies, community events, and competitions.
• Prepare students for auditions, solo performances and ensemble evaluations.
• Manage stage presence, traditional attire (traje de charro), choreography and overall performance aesthetics.
• Maintain an organized inventory of sheet music, instruments, accessories, and performance uniforms.

• Foster a deep appreciation for mariachi music’s cultural history and traditions.
• Build a positive, inclusive, and collaborative team culture among student musicians.
• Communicate with parents, school administrators and community partners about schedules, expectations and program needs.
• Assist in fundraising efforts or grant compliance when required.

• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Music Education, Ethnomusicology, or related field; or equivalent professional performance and teaching experience.
• Proficiency playing and teaching at least two primary mariachi instruments (preferred rhythm/armonía and melody).
• Prior experience directing a youth or school‑based musical ensemble.

• Bilingual Proficiency: Fluent in English and Spanish.
• Strong knowledge of mariachi history, styles and regional variations.
• Excellent classroom management, mentorship, and motivational skills for diverse youth.
• Strong organizational and logistical skills for event planning and transport.

• Requires flexible hours, including occasional evenings and weekends.
• Ability to lift and transport musical instruments and sound equipment.

• Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
