Supervises personnel engaged in transportation engineering work in one or more functional areas such as planning, design, construction, transportation/traffic operations, maintenance and/or bridge inspection. Ensures compliance with applicable federal and state laws, policies, procedures, standards and guidelines. Work requires contact with governmental officials, private entities and/or contractors. Employees at this level are virtually self-supervising and assume direct accountability for the work product.
EssentialDuties:
- Acts as a liaison with divisions, MPOs, cities, counties and other governmental entities concerning traffic management and traffic safety projects.
- Coordinates with district design on schematics, assists with capacity and level of service studies and reviews in-house and consultant traffic control/traffic management/intelligent transportation systems (ITS) plans and projects.
- Investigates public complaints on traffic signals, signs, railroad crossings, pavement markings or with a field review to determine and develop incident management strategies and procedures and responds with explanatory letters.
- Makes presentations and represents TxDOT.
- Meets with appropriate Department supervisors and/or sections, law enforcement agencies and city officials to discuss traffic problems and possible solutions.
- Monitors consultants' progress and work quality; checks invoices and associated documents; prepares supplemental agreements.
- Oversees and/or performs traffic engineering studies to recommend solutions for high accident locations, to warrant traffic signals and speed zones and to determine capacity and channelization of the highways.
- Oversees the operations and maintenance of an ITS operations center/managed area.
- Responsible for determining the need for coordinating, developing and reviewing the plans, specifications and estimates for traffic projects and traffic management systems projects or may prepare related plans.
- Responsible for development and implementation of innovative programs, projects, designs, concepts and solutions.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Education
:
Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related science bachelor's or higher degree accepted by TX PELS.
Experience
:
- 4 years experience in transportation engineering. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related graduate level education may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications
- Must have one (1) year supervisory/managerial experience. Project leader or lead worker experience may substitute for supervisory/managerial experience.
Certifications:
- Valid US driver’s license at the time of application. This position requires driving a state vehicle.
- Licensed Prof Engineer*
- * Professional engineers licensed in another state in the United States, but not currently licensed in the State of Texas, must (1) meet the license requirements of the State of Texas Engineering Practices Act, (2) obtain a professional engineering license from the State of Texas within six (6) months of the date of hire, and (3) sign an agreement to that effect as a condition of employment.

Working Conditions:
- Sedentary work:

Standard Conditions of Employment (TxDOT)
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
