Instrumentation & Controls Engineer

Marathon Petroleum is seeking an Instrumentation & Controls Engineer to support safe, reliable operations across our refining and energy assets. In this role, you will design, specify, and maintain field instrumentation, control valves, and PLC/DCS/SCADA systems, ensuring compliance with safety and environmental standards. You will develop control strategies, update P&IDs, support HAZOP/LOPA, and lead troubleshooting and commissioning activities. Collaborating with operations, maintenance, and project teams, you'll drive performance, reliability, and continuous improvement in a safety-focused environment.

Responsibilities

• Design, specify, and maintain instrumentation, control valves, and control systems (PLC/DCS/SCADA).
• Develop and optimize control strategies and loop tuning to support safe, reliable plant operation.
• Review and update P&IDs, instrument indexes, and control narratives for projects and modifications.
• Lead troubleshooting and root cause analysis for instrumentation and controls issues in the field.
• Support project execution, including scope development, vendor coordination, FAT/SAT, and commissioning.
• Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and industry standards (ISA, NFPA, API).
• Provide technical support to operations and maintenance teams, including training and documentation.
• Participate in risk assessments (HAZOP/LOPA) and implement recommendations in control systems.
