What Your Day Will Look Like:

The Water & Wastewater Field Engineer is responsible for providing engineering support for the construction, operation, maintenance, and improvement of water distribution, wastewater collection, and utility infrastructure systems. This role performs field inspections, evaluates system performance, coordinates with contractors and operations personnel, ensures regulatory compliance, and supports capital improvement and maintenance projects. The position serves as a liaison between engineering, operations, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient utility services.

This hybrid job operates between an office environment and a field environment and routinely requires the use of standard office equipment such as computers, phones and copy machines. May require occasional exposure to work environments that may include inclement weather, heat, humidity, noise, hazard, atmospheric conditions, and bodies of water, depending on project requirements.

What You'll Do:
  • Conduct field inspections of water distribution, wastewater collection, and utility infrastructure projects to verify compliance with engineering standards, specifications, and regulatory requirements.
  • Monitor construction activities and coordinate with contractors, consultants, operations personnel, and regulatory agencies.
  • Investigate operational issues, system failures, customer complaints, and infrastructure deficiencies; recommend corrective actions.
  • Assist with planning, design review, implementation, and commissioning of utility infrastructure improvements and capital projects.
  • Collect, analyze, and interpret field data related to system performance, asset condition, pressure, flow, and water quality.
  • Review engineering drawings, specifications, work orders, and project documentation for accuracy and constructability.
  • Support asset management initiatives by documenting infrastructure conditions and recommending repair, rehabilitation, or replacement strategies.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations governing water and wastewater systems.
  • Coordinate utility locates, field surveys, testing activities, and construction inspections.
  • Prepare technical reports, project updates, inspection records, and engineering recommendations.
  • Assist with emergency response activities involving water main breaks, sewer overflows, service interruptions, and other utility incidents.
  • Utilize GIS, asset management, work management, and engineering software systems to maintain accurate records and support decision-making.
  • Collaborate with internal departments and external stakeholders to improve operational efficiency and service reliability.
  • Promote and enforce workplace safety standards and safe work practices.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
What You'll Need:
  • Bachelor of Science in Civil, Environmental, Chemical, Mechanical, or a related engineering discipline.
  • 1+ years of relevant experience, experience with water distribution systems, wastewater collection systems, pump stations, treatment facilities, or utility construction projects is highly desirable
  • Basic proficiency in AutoCAD & Civil 3D software is a plus but not required.

  • While performing the duties of this job, physical demands of the employee include frequent sitting, moving, standing, talking, hearing, and occasional balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, handling, grasping, and feeling. This job may occasionally require operating a company vehicle, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling up to 35 lbs.
