A Brief Overview
The Senior Tax Associate is the team member responsible for preparing and reviewing stand‑alone business tax returns, financial statement‑related tax returns, individual tax returns, tax research, and other related tax projects. This position will utilize advanced research skills and work with tax software applications to complete various tax returns for review.
What you will do- Work on various tax preparation projects (federal, state, sales & use) independently under the guidance of a supervisor (depending on the tax return, the supervisor could be a Manager, Senior Manager, or SVP).
- Prepare and review stand‑alone work papers following the Company’s policies and procedures.
- Prepare and review typical business and personal income tax returns.
- Identify and bring unusual/significant accounting and tax‑related questions to the supervisor.
- Lead colleagues by taking ownership of all assigned projects.
- Become familiar with the Company’s policies, procedures, manuals, forms, and relevant software.
- Prepare and review working trial balance, adjusting journal entries, and tax accruals for stand‑alone tax returns.
- Maintain property and equipment records and calculate depreciation and amortization, as needed.
- Prepare and reconcile account schedules as required.
- Complete tax returns for some financial statement‑related returns.
- Perform research projects in the area of taxation, including payroll and sales tax.
- Perform analysis of trial balances and calculation of book/tax adjustments for financial reporting purposes.
- Prepare more complicated business tax returns, including consolidated and multi‑state returns.
- Communicate with colleagues regarding information needed or clarification of issues.
- Assist or review the month‑end closings, as necessary.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Tax, Finance or Accounting required.
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- 3‑5 years of tax preparation experience required.
- Specific work experience in a complex, high volume environment preferred.
- Experience with tax research databases required.
- Experience with JD Edwards‑Enterprise One System or other large ERP system preferred.
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in the use of Excel and MS Office.
- Successful problem‑solving and analytical skills.
- Ability to perform in highly interruptive conditions.
- Ability to identify problems, collect and analyze data, and draw logical conclusions.
- Ability to prioritize, multitask, and meet deadlines.
- Analytical and detail‑oriented with strong organizational skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
- Proficient in all tax compliance process software or comparable programs and standard tax work papers.
- Requires an organized, independent thinker who has the ability to be a part of a team, demonstrates strong attention to detail, and has knowledge of tax return practices and procedures.
- Must demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and interpersonal skills, particularly the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management and vendors.
