Overview

Epidemiologist II is responsible for advanced (senior level) epidemiology work related to infectious diseases and notifiable conditions under the direction of the Epidemiology Supervisor. Responsibilities include managing data collection operations, improving reporting standards, designing training programs, collecting and interpreting epidemiological data to detect trends and outbreaks, assisting with quality assurance, leading training in surveillance and public health preparedness, and providing consultation to public health professionals and healthcare providers.

The role serves as a state resource during infectious disease outbreaks or bioterrorism events and may require travel within Texas and PHR 9/10 (33 counties).

Essential Job Functions (EJFs)
  • (50%) EPIDEMIOLOGY AND SURVEILLANCE - Lead project management to plan, execute, and complete epidemiological program initiatives; establish goals, objectives, and timelines; conduct and coordinate epidemiological case investigations and disease outbreak response; review laboratory reports to confirm reportable conditions meet case definitions; create and disseminate technical reports based on surveillance data; oversee survey instruments to ensure data quality; coordinate data collection with surveillance systems;

    develop strategies to improve reporting quality, standardization, and timeliness; organize team meetings, trainings, and special projects with regional epidemiologists.
  • (15%) TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE - Build and maintain collaborative relationships with partners (local health departments, infection control, physicians, laboratories, school nurses, state agencies); facilitate communication; recommend interventions and control measures; provide accurate technical information while maintaining confidentiality; develop tools to promote awareness of epidemiologic trends; evaluate resources for disease investigations and surveillance projects.
  • (15%) TRAINING AND EDUCATION - Plan and deliver training to improve disease reporting and preparedness awareness; develop briefing documents, epidemiological articles, fact sheets, technical reports, infographics, brochures, presentations; use computer programs and statistical software to present information; use project management tools to improve training outcomes; organize regional program workshops and presentations.
  • (10%) PUBLIC HEALTH EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS AND RESPONSE - Develop comprehensive workplans with goals, timelines, and resources; serve on the Epidemiology Response Team (ERT); may respond to all-hazards events or emergencies; participate in 24/7 on-call rotation; assist with inventory and storage of response equipment; travel within regions 9/10 to build stakeholder relationships.
  • (10%) OTHER DUTIES - Other duties as assigned may include disaster response or COOP activation; may require alternate shift patterns; support Regional Health and Medical Operations during emergencies; adhere to HHS rules and attendance policy.
