OverviewJoin the Office of the Attorney General’s Child Support Division (CSD) in supporting responsible parenting and ensuring Texas children receive the support they need. The Special Litigator performs senior‑level legal work representing the state in judicial and administrative matters, providing legal advice, consultation, and technical assistance to the Child Support Program and staff.
Responsibilities- Represent the State of Texas at legal proceedings to locate, establish, enforce, modify, or terminate court orders for child support and medical support.
- Provide legal advice, consultation and technical assistance to the Child Support Program, including researching and analyzing factual and legal issues; preparing and responding to discovery requests and pleadings; preparing trial briefs and memoranda on complex cases and issues; and assisting field office staff in handling complex cases in court, when available.
- Handle civil litigation of cases such as probate, tax and foreclosure suits, and personal injury claims.
- Review and approve employer enforcement submissions from field offices; assist with case preparation and legal pleadings production; and represent the Office of the Attorney General / CSD at employer enforcement hearings, when necessary.
- Review and approve administrative license suspension cases for filing, and represent the Office of the Attorney General / CSD in license suspension hearings.
- Review criminal non‑support submissions and act as the District Attorney liaison, including prosecution when required.
- Assist in the planning of the annual Statewide Assistant Attorneys’ General Conference.
- Work on special projects and participate in various work groups, conferences, and meetings as assigned by the Deputy Division Chief, Field Legal Practice, including speaking and delivering presentations on IV‑D legal or practice issues.
- Develop and deliver training for Child Support staff on special litigation functions.
- Perform related work as assigned.
- Graduation from an accredited law school with a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
- Four years of full‑time legal experience, with at least two years in Family Law.
- Licensed to practice law in Texas and in good standing with the State Bar of Texas.
- Knowledge of Family Law and the Texas Family Code.
- Skill in legal writing, mediation, negotiation, and serving as a trial lawyer.
- Ability to prepare sound opinions, conduct investigations, and perform legal research.
- Computer proficiency for word‑processing and data entry/retrieval.
- Strong organizational skills: handle multiple tasks, prioritize, and meet deadlines.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Sound judgment and effective decision‑making ability.
- Positive response to constructive feedback.
- Capacity to work cooperatively in a professional office environment.
- Excellent customer service skills.
- Availability to work in person at the assigned OAG work location and to perform all tasks onsite, unless approved leave applies.
- Ability to arrange personal transportation for business travel.
- Willingness to work more than 40 hours as needed in compliance with the FLSA.
- Physical ability to lift and relocate up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to travel, including overnight travel, up to 25% of the time.
- Experience with the Texas Child Support Program.
- Knowledge of probate law.
- Jury trial experience.
- Experience handling a high‑volume legal practice.
- Proficiency in Spanish (reading, writing, speaking).
