Job Title

TTI Research Scientist – Agency, Texas A&M Transportation Institute – Infrastructure Group

Location & Work Arrangement

El Paso, Texas. Hybrid remote option with at least two onsite days (three days beginning September1) in the TTI El Paso office for the first 30days of employment. After that, flexible work arrangement may be approved.

Job Summary

This role leads design, coordination, supervision, evaluation, and quality‑control of research projects of significant scope. The incumbent acts as principal investigator on self‑initiated projects, develops new research initiatives, contributes to strategic research goals, leads junior staff, and secures and manages extramurally funded research.

Essential Duties
  • Applied research and management (70%) – Overall direction and management of projects, including day‑to‑day supervision, planning, administration, evaluation, and implementation of research functions. Includes project management, data collection and analysis, work coordination, multi‑disciplinary team leadership, data gathering, model development, synthesis of statistics, and delivery of high‑quality project deliverables.
  • Business development (5%) – Develop and maintain relationships with sponsors, propose innovative projects, identify new business opportunities, build teaming relationships, assist in proposal preparation, and pursue independent research funding.
  • Staff management and supervision (5%) – Mentor and evaluate staff, approve time and effort, and approve leave requests. Supervise senior and junior staff work performance and assignments.
  • Report preparation and presentations (10%) – Compile, document, and present research results in reports, technical memoranda, and presentations to sponsors, technical meetings, and conferences.
  • Program asset management (5%) – Maintain program vehicles, tools, and other data‑collection assets and keep records of availability and condition.
  • Other duties (5%) – Perform additional tasks as necessary.

Required

Education and Experience
  • Master’s degree in a related field.
  • At least 8years of related work experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering.
  • At least 5years of experience in the concrete industry.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies as a Researcher
  • Special expertise in cement and concrete materials, concrete pavement, or full‑depth reclamation/treatment with cement.
  • Recognized expert who can direct research of significant scope, select and lead a team, and deliver successful projects.
  • Strong technical skills, including familiarity with data modeling, metadata, and research software.
  • Ability to identify sponsor opportunities, write proposals, and network for multi‑agency proposals.
  • Authorship of papers and ability to present at technical and professional settings.
  • Teamwork: organize and maintain multi‑agency teams and mentor members to meet deadlines and budgets.
Physical Requirements
  • Common office functions and frequent communication.
  • Operate computer and laboratory equipment.
  • Move heavy objects (up to 50lb).
  • Drive and work in hot, cold, or extreme weather conditions.
  • May require work beyond normal hours, weekends, and travel.
