Peace Officer

Responsibilities

• Provide protection and service to all students, faculty, staff, and the general public at all El Paso Community College campuses and facilities.
• Enforce and maintain law and order through continuous patrol, surveillance, and crime prevention in accordance with EPCC policies.
• Patrol assigned college campuses and facilities by motor vehicle, bicycle, or foot.
• Answer calls from Central Dispatch and assist with service requests, civil or criminal complaints.
• Open and secure campus facilities daily, set alarms, and operate security surveillance systems.
• Monitor campus facilities via surveillance systems and mobile/foot patrols.
• Inspect premises for indications of criminal activity.
• Conduct preliminary investigations, obtain information, file reports, witness statements, and affidavits.
• Make arrests as required, transport arrested individuals to local police stations or county jail for processing and booking.
• Testify in court when summoned and coordinate investigations with city, county, state, and federal agencies.
• Provide first aid during medical emergencies and coordinate with EMS and Fire Department to transport persons to hospitals.
• Provide evacuation assistance and directions during emergency situations.
• Follow up on pending cases and transport persons or property as needed.
• Make presentations to students and staff on crime prevention and safety.
• Provide escorts for personal safety or for personnel making cash deposits.
• Assist with data entry for vehicle registration and issuance of parking decals.
• Provide courtesy services to motorists, e.g., jump starts and unlocking vehicles.
• Perform basic terminal operator duties (dispatcher) and obtain TLETS certification to access TCIC/NICC.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Active Peace Officer License from the State of Texas (TCOLE) or successful completion of a TCOLE‑accredited academy and state exam.
• Experience/ability to conduct investigations.
• Experience/ability to enforce laws and regulations.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
• Ability to analyze complex situations quickly and act accordingly.
• Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others.
• Familiarity with use‑of‑force and arrest procedures.
• Must pass a medical exam, psychological screening, and drug screening as required by TCOLE or EPCC.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must successfully pass a thorough background investigation; failure to submit required documents results in disqualification.
• Must successfully pass a fingerprint check by DPS and FBI.
• Must have registered with the Selective Service (if applicable).
• Must submit a copy of Military Discharge Form (DD‑214) if applicable.
• Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license.
• Must be insurable.
• Must agree to swear or affirm to preserve, protect, and defend the U.S. and Texas constitutions and laws.

• Experience working in an academic setting.
• Associate’s Degree.

• This is a security‑sensitive position as defined under the Texas Education Code, Section 51.215; the successful applicant will be required to undergo a criminal background check.
• Operating a motor vehicle is an essential function; all candidates will undergo a motor vehicle records check, with annual reviews thereafter.
• Job requires irregular or extended hours, including evenings, graveyards, weekends, and holidays.
• Applicants must successfully complete an oral board interview.
• Campus location and work schedule may vary.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to taste or smell. The employee must occasionally lift or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
