Position Description

  • Laborers have general responsibility to provide support and assistance to the other skilled crafts working on the project. Laborers provide support for the form carpenters and for the concrete operation in general, ironworkers/rodbusters involved in installing reinforcing steel, and masons involved in the installation of block and brickwork. This is a safety-sensitive position.
  • Prepare areas for the placement of concrete involves final excavation of dirt and rock and fine grading for floor slabs. This work involves shoveling for extended periods of time.
  • Assembly of concrete forms, laborers are required to lift prefabricated metal form panels and assist in their placement.
  • Handle the concrete bucket suspended from a crane that transfers concrete from the truck to the placement area; after pouring, laborers muck the concrete in slabs to spread it evenly.
  • Assist in stripping concrete forms and transporting them for storage after the concrete has cured.
  • Assist concrete finishers in moving power trowels and power screeds used to finish the concrete surface.
  • Support block masons by handling and transporting bags of cement, lime, sand, and grout, and include stocking blocks and bricks.
  • Assist carpenters in handling and setting door frames, transporting them from storage to work areas and stacking as needed.
  • Load, unload, and identify building materials, machinery, and tools; distribute site materials per project plans and specifications; ensure materials are properly distributed and the site is swept and well maintained.
  • Promote a safe work environment and communicate jobsite hazards; help secure the jobsite at the end of business each day and verify that all materials are properly stored.
Position Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Follow safe work practices in accordance with the Hensel Phelps safety and health program.
  • Take initiative.
  • Show keen attention to detail and ability to follow instructions.
  • Provide own safety footwear.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with co‑workers and stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate strong mathematical reasoning and quantitative skills.
  • Be reliable and punctual.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in construction layout, blueprint reading, and shop drawing reading.
  • Preparation of concrete placement areas including excavation, grading, and extended shoveling.
  • Assembly and placement of prefabricated metal form panels.
  • Operation of a concrete bucket from a crane to transfer concrete.
  • Assistance in mucking concrete slabs after pouring.
  • Assistance in stripping concrete forms and transporting them for storage.
  • Assistance to concrete finishers with power trowels and screeds.
  • Support of block masons by handling and transporting bags of cement, lime, sand, and grout; stocking blocks and bricks.
  • Assistance to carpenters handling door frames from storage to work areas.
  • Load, unload, and identify building materials, machinery, and tools; distribute per project plans and specifications; maintain a clean site.
  • Promotion of safe work environment and communication of hazards; secure jobsite each day and verify proper storage of materials.
Physical Work Classification & Demands
  • Heavy Work:
    Exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Periodically walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, read, see, speak, push, pull, lift, stand, and type; frequency varies by workflow.
  • Walk frequently around the jobsite.
  • Operate a computer or tablet and other office machinery such as a calculator and phone.
  • Communicate frequently with employees and external stakeholders about office and field administration.
  • Read and understand blueprints, load charts, and field measurements.
  • Climb ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps at various heights.
  • Work from heights for extended periods.
  • Maintain balance to prevent falling and to walk, stand, or crouch.
