This position is responsible for operating heavy equipment in a safe and secure manner in order to minimize the risk of injury and property damage. Equipment utilized in this position includes, but is not limited to, trucks, front‑end loaders, backhoes, blades, graders, compactors, and other equipment.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities
  • Ability to operate various pieces of heavy equipment, including loaders, excavators, dozers, graders, backhoes, etc.
  • Operate all heavy equipment in a safe and efficient manner according to all applicable policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for excavating trenches, digging holes, leveling dirt, and leveling asphalt.
  • Read and interpret grade and slope stakes and simple plans.
  • Ensure heavy equipment is safely and securely stored.
  • Perform daily safety and maintenance checks.
  • May perform general labor duties as needed.
  • Transport vehicle equipped with tools and materials to job sites.
  • Adhere to procedures, regulations, and guidelines while minimizing errors and safety risks.
  • Follow instructions and comprehend construction needs.
  • Regular attendance is required according to company policy to ensure the crew can operate at the normal efficiency level.
  • Perform other duties of a similar or related nature as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Able to follow established safety rules applicable to heavy equipment operators, to maintain a safe environment, and to adapt and respond to potentially hazardous conditions and use the appropriate PPE.
  • Able to follow directions, instructions, structured processes, and procedures.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions (extreme heat/cold, wind, rain).
  • Knowledge of vehicle and heavy equipment maintenance practices, repairs, and techniques.
  • Knowledge of equipment to ensure proper working conditions by checking gauges, dials, and other indicators.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule with last‑minute schedule changes, location, time of shift change (day & night), and overtime work as needed.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English/Spanish (preferred).
Education and Experience
  • High School or equivalent (preferred).
  • Minimum two (2) years’ experience in the construction industry.
  • One (1) year of work experience in roads and ground maintenance, or demonstrated ability to properly use equipment, and knowledge of road maintenance standards.
  • A CDL or other special classification of operator’s license may be required.
  • Valid Driver’s License with a clear MVR may be required.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent walking on uneven surfaces, including ground in varying weather conditions.
  • Frequently ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, and the like.
  • Constantly reaching, pushing, and pulling gears to operate the levers and the steering wheel.
  • Regularly sit, stand, or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift/workday.
  • May stoop, kneel, or bend on an occasional basis.
  • May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on a frequent basis.
  • Regularly works near heavy equipment and moving machinery.

    Exposure to the outdoor environment with machinery/equipment in the surrounding area.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Excellent vision or the use of prescribed lenses.
  • Able to work in all weather conditions (extreme heat/cold, wind, rain).
  • Able to safely operate a personal and/or company motor vehicle.
  • Able to wear personal protective equipment is required, including but not limited to steel‑toe shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, vest, etc.
