Position Description

This position constructs and repairs building frameworks and structural components including stairways, door frames, partitions, rafters, cabinetry, siding, and drywall. Carpenters must pay great attention to detail, understand wood and metal properties, and perform support activities typically executed by laborers. This is a safety‐sensitive role.

Position Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Follow safe work practices in accordance with the Hensel Phelps safety and health program.
  • Take initiative and ask questions.
  • Possess keen attention to detail and be able to follow instructions.
  • Provide own safety footwear.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with co‑workers and stakeholders.
  • Strong mathematical reasoning and quantitative skills.
  • Reliable and punctual, with reliable transportation and consistent attendance.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in construction layout, blueprint reading and shop drawing reading.
  • Assist with assembly and removal of concrete forms.
  • Assist with building and installing window‑frames, doors, door frames, staircases, partitions, millwork, trim, siding, drywall, and overall building frames.
  • Ensure that layout of flooring, roofing, and drywall is level and compatible.
  • Read blueprints, drawings, and sketches to fully grasp project requirements.
  • Measure and calculate the size and amount of material needed, including cutting, shaping, and smoothing wood or other required materials.
  • Assist with handling, transporting, and setting door frames.
  • Load, unload, identify, and distribute building materials, machinery, and tools.
  • Job‑shadow area assignments to ensure project knowledge and skill progression.
  • Assist with area housekeeping.
  • Promote a safe work environment and communicate job‑site hazards; help secure the job‑site at the end of each day and verify proper storage of site materials.
Physical Work Classification & Demands
  • Heavy work: exert up to 100 lbs occasionally, up to 50 lbs frequently, and up to 20 lbs constantly to move objects.
  • Periodic walking, kneeling, sitting, crouching, reaching, stooping, reading, speaking, pushing, pulling, lifting, standing, and typing.
  • Walk frequently around the job‑site.
  • Operate a computer or tablet, calculator, and phone.
  • Communicate with employees and external stakeholders about office and field administration.
  • Read and understand blueprints, load charts, and take/verify field measurements.
  • Climb or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps.
  • Work from heights for extended periods.
  • Maintain balance to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching.
  • Bend the spine at the waist while stooping.
  • Extend hands and arms in any direction for various lengths of time.
  • Apply pressure to objects with fingers and palm regularly.
  • Operate a vehicle as certified and appropriate.
  • Occasional exposure to high and low temperatures.
  • Frequent exposure to a noisy environment and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
  • Use hands and wrists with various tools.
  • Prolonged use of jackhammer and pavement breaker.
  • Use wheelbarrows and brooms.
  • Repetitive use of hands and wrists with power, rotational, and vibration tools including jackhammers and pavement breakers.
  • Tolerate legally permissible exposure to dusts and chemicals such as cement dust, solvents, and curing compounds.
  • Safely wear a respirator and pass applicable medical and fit testing examinations.
  • Hear commands from supervisors and backup safety alarms on equipment.
