Position Description

Cement finishers are responsible for placement and surface preparation of concrete in conformance with the project requirements. This is a safety sensitive position.

Position Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Follow safe work practices in accordance with the Hensel Phelps safety and health program.
  • Must be able to take initiative.
  • Possess a keen attention to detail and be able to follow instructions.
  • Workers must provide their own safety footwear.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively and professionally.
  • Strong mathematical reasoning and quantitative skills.
  • Must be reliable and punctual.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experienced in construction layout, blueprint reading and shop drawing reading.
  • Positioning themselves on the concrete forms and moving the pump hose or concrete bucket into place for the pouring of the concrete.
  • Levelling the top surface of freshly poured concrete on floors, walls, ceilings, or sidewalks; responsible for finishing the concrete surface to meet the tolerances for thickness and flatness before the concrete has cured, initially striking the concrete with a screed to create a level, smooth surface.
  • Applies a bull float to the concrete to further smooth the surface and bring the moisture to the top of the concrete area.
  • Applying hardening and sealing compounds to cure the surface of concrete, including waterproofing, damp‑proofing, and restoring concrete surfaces.
  • Installing anchor bolts, steel plates and other fixtures in freshly poured concrete.
  • Operates a trowel to finish the surface when the concrete has reached a semi‑cured status; follows with a steel trowel, often using a 14‑inch steel trowel for final troweling.
  • Promotes a safe work environment and communicates jobsite hazards.
Physical Work Classification & Demands
  • Heavy Work:
    Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds frequently, and up to 20 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Walk, kneel, sit, crouch, reach, stoop, read/see, speak, push, pull, lift, stand, and finger/type; frequency varies by workflow.
  • Walking – Frequently move about the jobsite.
  • Operate computer or tablet and other office machinery such as a calculator and phone.
  • Communicate frequently with employees and external stakeholders regarding office and field administration.
  • Read written communications, view mail submissions, read and understand blueprints, load charts, and take/verify field measurements.
  • Climbing – Ascend/descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, and ramps at various heights.
  • Working from heights – Comfortable and able to work from heights for extended times.
  • Balancing – Maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling.
  • Stooping – Bend downward and forward by the spine at the waist.
  • Reaching – Extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction for various lengths of time.
  • Grasping – Apply pressure to an object with fingers and palm regularly.
  • Visual acuity and ability to operate a vehicle as certified and appropriate.
  • Occasionally exposed to high and low temperatures.
  • Frequently exposed to noisy environment and outdoor elements such as precipitation and wind.
  • Use of hands and wrists with various tools.
  • Prolonged use of jackhammer and pavement breaker.
  • Use of wheelbarrows and brooms.
  • Repetitive use of hands and wrists using power, rotational, and vibration tools including prolonged use of jackhammers and pavement breakers.
  • Tolerate legally permissible exposure to dusts and chemicals, such as cement dust, solvents, and curing compounds.
  • Must be able to safely wear a respirator and pass applicable medical and fit testing examinations.
  • Must be able to hear commands from supervisors and backup safety alarms on equipment.
