Position SummaryThe Fire Alarm Technician is responsible for the installation, programming, troubleshooting, testing, inspection, and maintenance of fire alarm systems in commercial, industrial, and institutional environments. This position ensures all work complies with applicable codes, standards (such as NFPA 72), and manufacturer requirements, while maintaining a high standard of quality and customer service.
Key Responsibilities- Install conduit, wire, fire alarm panels, initiating devices, notification appliances, and related hardware.
- Program and configure fire alarm systems based on engineered drawings and system requirements.
- Coordinate with electricians, general contractors, and project managers to ensure timely completion of installations.
- Diagnose and repair faults in existing fire alarm systems, including wiring, device, or panel-level issues.
- Replace defective components and update system programming as needed.
- Respond to emergency service calls during and outside of regular business hours (if applicable).
- Perform functional and acceptance testing of newly installed or existing fire alarm systems.
- Conduct inspections according to NFPA 72 and other relevant codes.
- Complete inspection forms, deficiency reports, and customer documentation accurately and promptly.
- Ensure that all work complies with NFPA, NEC, IBC, and local AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) requirements.
- Follow all safety practices, including use of PPE, fall protection, and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area and vehicle.
- Maintain accurate records of time, work completed, parts used, and materials ordered.
- Complete and submit service reports, test results, and redline drawings to the office team or supervisor.
- Communicate clearly with clients, building personnel, and team members.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 2+ years of hands‑on experience in fire alarm system installation, service, or inspection.
- Experience with major fire alarm systems (Notifier, EST, Fire‑Lite, Silent Knight, Siemens, etc.) is preferred.
- NM Low Voltage Journeyman License (ES-3J)
- Manufacturer training/certification is a plus.
- NICET Level I or II in Fire Alarm Systems preferred (or ability to obtain within 6–12 months).
- Ability to read blueprints, riser diagrams, wiring schematics, and installation manuals.
- Proficient in the use of multimeters, hand tools, and power tools.
- Familiarity with laptop-based programming software and electronic test equipment.
- Knowledge of low voltage wiring and code requirements.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Detail‑oriented and highly organized.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
- Reliable, punctual, and professional.
- Work involves physical activity including climbing ladders, working in ceiling spaces, and lifting 50+ pounds.
- Job sites may include commercial buildings, schools, hospitals, and construction environments.
- Travel to customer sites required; company vehicle may be provided.
- Occasional after‑hours or on‑call work may be required depending on service schedule.
