Position: CRIMINAL JUSTICE COORDINATION - ASSESSMENT & INTAKE OFFICER

Acceptable Experience and Education

Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or a related field, and two years of full‑time experience in either casework or counseling with good interviewing skills. Equivalent combination of experience and training also acceptable.

Certificates and Licenses Required

Must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and a personal mobile smart device by the hire start date.

Essential Duties
  • Work 24/7 rotating shifts (days, swings, graveyard), including holidays and weekends, as scheduled.
  • Conduct pre‑release interviews, criminal history checks, risk assessments, and indigence eligibility assessments for qualified defendants.
  • Interview individuals and collect information from collateral sources to determine eligibility; complete interview forms and documents; enter data into county databases.
  • Evaluate client eligibility for services, make referrals, and complete all necessary paperwork.
  • Analyze and update records, prepare detailed reports for courts and attorneys.
  • Perform technical document analysis under strict time frames and produce accurate reports.
  • Carry out complex research to analyze problems and provide solutions.
  • Write, type, scan, proofread, and process various documents (correspondence, reports, memos, statistical charts).
  • Maintain case files and records, ensuring they are current, accurate, and complete.
  • Serve as a department representative when coordinating with government officials or community groups.
  • Enter data on client eligibility status and verify information collected during assessments.
  • Supervise released individuals with conditions of release, monitor compliance, and recommend additional court actions.
  • Make phone calls to healthcare entities to confirm defendants’ compliance with mental‑health conditions.
  • Review daily jail population reports to identify inmates eligible for bond release; prepare bond release forms for court approval.
  • Coordinate with other departments or agencies to ensure assessment completion and proper documentation.
  • Screen defendants for mental health issues and provide referrals to sister agencies.
  • Conduct risk and needs analyses and perform drug and alcohol screening as required.
  • Make home visits and coordinate clients’ participation in rehabilitative efforts.
  • Collect urine samples and administer breathalyzer tests per department guidelines; monitor electronic equipment.
  • Assist the Mexican Consulate in releasing Mexican nationals from the Detention Facility.
  • Collaborate with social agencies to support client welfare.
  • Assist in improving department procedures.
  • Act as a temporary substitute for immediate supervisor or coworkers during absences.
  • Attend meetings, trainings, orientations, and information sessions.
  • Stay current on new trends and innovations in the field.
  • Maintain a positive team atmosphere and work well with colleagues.
  • Uphold honesty, integrity, and ethics on and off duty and comply with all county and department policies.
Other Important Duties
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Work weekends, graveyard, holidays, and rotating shifts as scheduled.
  • Act as an on‑call officer in the detention facility on a rotating basis.
  • Work a flexible schedule and more than 40 hours during the workweek when required.
  • Assist in supervision services, including collection of urine screens and breathalyzers.
  • Assist in electronic monitoring services.
  • Travel to court, home visits, and collateral travel with little or no notice.
Summary of Position

The Assessment Intake Officer assists the El Paso County courts and stakeholders in determining the public‑safety risk, flight risk, and indecency status of defendants, providing accurate and thorough information to enhance bond decisions.

Minimum Requirements:

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of interviewing concepts, risk assessment techniques, and modern office administration.
  • Knowledge of legal terminology, business and grant management, contract administration, and public/private grant resources.
  • Knowledge of PR bond requirements, effective customer service practices, training principles, communication skills, and computer use (Windows and Microsoft products).
  • Skill in creating and maintaining client records, verifying data, preparing reports, and applying judgment to adapt guidelines.
  • Ability to work rotating shifts, holidays, and weekends.
  • Pass a criminal background check.
  • Bilingual (English‑Spanish) preferred.
Organizational Relationships

Reports to: CJC Supervisor

Directs: This is a non‑supervisory position

Other: Frequent contact with criminally accused individuals who have not yet gone to trial, the Mexican Consulate, local, state and federal agencies, social agencies, law enforcement agencies, the general public, criminal courts and staff, and other county employees.
