Brief

Job Description:

After a family has been investigated, a Family Based Safety Services (FBSS) worker works with the family to implement protective changes and keep children safe  worker provides services from the agency, community resources, and extended families. Newly hired employees holding a Master’s Degree in Social Work may qualify for an increased starting salary.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Respond quickly in crisis situations.
  • Provide time‑limited in‑home services to assess protective needs, develop treatment plans, and use resources to minimize risk and safeguard the child.
  • Assess child safety and take necessary actions, including removal of a child if appropriate.
  • Interact objectively with caregivers who have abused or neglected children.
  • Address family issues such as income, money management, and personal relationships.
  • Handle encounters with family members who may be angry or scared.
  • Identify and connect families to community resources and support.
  • Help parents recognize behaviors that lead to abuse and empower change.
  • Determine actions to reduce immediate threats, including court testimony, placement of children in substitute care, and referral to crisis intervention therapy.
  • Gather kinship information to support child placement if placed in DFPS custody.
  • Document all relevant information accurately and timely.
  • Work flexible hours beyond 8 a.m.–5 p.m., Monday–Friday.
  • Maintain objectivity and empathy when engaging families in crisis.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with law enforcement, judicial officials, medical and other community professionals.
  • Attend trainings, meetings, and staffings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to maintain unit operations.
  • Promote and demonstrate respect for cultural diversity and competency.
  • Attend work regularly in accordance with agency leave policy.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of child development and family dynamics.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining working relationships.
  • Problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Ability to travel to homes and offices after 5 p.m.
  • Ability to be on call on a rotating basis and work irregular hours.
  • Ability to work in emotionally intense environments and in potentially high‑crime or unsanitary areas.

Registrations, Licensure Requirements or

Certifications:

This position requires use of the applicant's personal motor vehicle. Applicants must have a reliable vehicle, a valid Texas driver’s license appropriate for the vehicle and passenger or cargo load, and a clean driving record for the past five years. Proof of driving record, insurance, and license must be provided.

  • Worker I:
    Accredited Bachelor’s degree OR Associate’s degree plus two years of relevant experience OR 60 accredited college credits plus two years of experience OR 90 accredited college credits plus one year of experience.
  • Worker II:
    Accredited Bachelor’s degree OR Associate’s degree plus two years of relevant experience OR 60 accredited college credits plus two years of experience OR 90 accredited college credits plus one year of experience; OR previously employed as a Specialist I with certification, or Specialist II, or Investigator II within DFPS.
