Salary

Minimum: $40,918.00 – Maximum: $71,055.00 per year.

Work Hours and Travel

Day shift, 40 hours/week, Monday‑Friday with possible nights, weekends, holidays; 25% travel.

Job Description

Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. The job requires contact with private entities and follows standard practices that do not require frequent supervision.

Key Responsibilities by Level
  • Tech I: Assist in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; basic welding; use or move equipment/tools; support law enforcement at accident sites; assist stranded motorists; traffic control; maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; perform roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers, and signs; haul materials; pick up litter and debris; mow rights‑of‑way; operate light equipment (front‑end loader, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, mower);

    sand or clean bridges; complete other assigned duties.
  • Tech II: Inspect traffic control devices and placement for compliance; maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; skilled roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, markers, and signs; identify, repair, and install signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; welding; support law enforcement and stranded motorists; traffic control; inspect materials and equipment; maintain picnic and rest areas; operate heavy equipment (front‑end loader, tractor‑trailer haul truck, dragline, shovel, paint stripper, dump truck);

    perform preventive maintenance inspections, routine servicing, and minor repairs; complete required reports.
  • Tech III: Maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; perform highly skilled roadway repairs; inspect and process damage claims; operate complex heavy equipment (motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self‑propelled asphalt distributor, profiling/milling machine); identify, repair, and install signs, delineators, mailbox supports and posts; train other employees; support law enforcement and stranded motorists; complete other assigned duties.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Not specified.
  • Experience:

    Tech I – No experience required;
    Tech II – 1 year in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work;
    Tech III – 2 years (or equivalent education substituted 1:1).
  • Substitutions for technical training or education from an accredited institution may be used on a year‑per‑year basis.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Tech I:
    Valid driver’s license required; must obtain Commercial Class “A” CDL with an “N” endorsement within 120 calendar days of employment. Company‑sponsored CDL training available.
  • Tech II‑III:
    Must possess Commercial Class “A” CDL with an “N” endorsement at time of application. Military or veteran drivers must obtain Texas Class “A” CDL within 120 days of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Knowledge of intermodal transportation engineering, construction, and maintenance procedures.
  • Familiarity with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Operating light and heavy highway equipment.
  • Basic vehicle mechanics and maintenance.
  • Public relations skills for effective working relationships.
Physical Requirements

Protective gear required (respirator, hard hat, steel‑toed boots, etc.). May be exposed to extreme temperatures, noise, vibration, hazardous materials, and atmospheric conditions. Must lift up to 50 lbs; perform stooping, kneeling, reaching, crawling, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, and repetitive motions. Must pass a drug test and be available 24‑hour for emergency response.
