Position: (DEPARTMENTAL INTERNAL ONLY) ROAD & BRIDGE DEPARTMENT - ROAD MAINTENANCE WORKER, SENIOR

Road/Maintenance Worker, Senior

This position is for current employees of the Road & Bridge Department only. This position is located at the Montana Warehouse. Acceptable experience and education include a high school diploma or equivalent; five (5) years experience with equipment related to job performance with at least three (3) years of that experience in the operation of heavy motorized vehicles and equipment, plus a minimum of one (1) year in a lead or supervisory role.

Certificates and licenses required include a Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities, with a driving record acceptable to the County of El Paso; a valid state of Texas Class "A" commercial driver's license; and subject to federal drug and local drug and alcohol testing regulations.

Typical Duties

Essential duties include coordinating daily activities and events assigned by the Road Maintenance Foreman; supervising department employees, assigning and reviewing work; responsible for timecards, training, providing input on performance evaluations, and making recommendations on hiring, terminating, and disciplining personnel; motivating and working with employees to correct deficiencies; demonstrating leadership and ability to deliver efficiency and quality at the highest of standards;

staying abreast of new trends and innovations in the field; substituting for foreman or co-workers during temporary absences by performing delegated duties sufficient to maintain continuity of normal operations; servicing and making minor repairs to vehicles and light or heavy equipment; performing daily preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment including checking oils, fluids, and tire pressure; operating tandem-axle dump trucks, semi-tractors with trailers an flat bed trucks or water trucks;

operating single axle dump trucks, flat bed trucks or water trucks; operating tractors with mowing machine and loader attachments and skid loaders; operating small patch compactors in connection with applying hot mix pothole patching on county roads; operating various hand and power tools; operating heavy equipment; providing instruction to other Road/Maintenance Workers on safe vehicle and equipment operations; picking up rocks, leaves and trash and cleaning up after heavier equipment and assisting in the loading and unloading of trucks;

installing guardrails, repairing detached or dented guardrails; patching potholes; supporting park and landfill maintenance as needed; painting dividing lines between traffic lanes; painting crosswalks; replacing and repairing traffic signs; assisting as flagger to monitor traffic during repairs of roadwork; setting out signs and cones to divert traffic around construction areas; maintaining warehouse area including sweeping, washing, and painting; removing weeds, dead trees, and brush;

trimming grass and trees around warehouse area; operating trucks to transport material and equipment to work sites; loading/unloading material from trucks; delivering material to secondary warehouse; pumping water from flooded streets and other areas; plowing snow; applying sand and salt to icy roads; operating heavy equipment under immediate supervision for emergency relief or training purposes as assigned; inspecting equipment, vehicles, and facility on a regular basis to ensure proper maintenance;

reporting damages or issues with vehicles or equipment to supervisor; working on road crews to maintain road shoulders; removing litter and debris from roadways; disposing of roadkill accordingly; performing park, landfill, and cemetery maintenance as needed; documenting daily work tasks completed and mileage used on vehicles; completing other related reports; assisting co-workers with various related tasks; fabricating sand bags; placing, removing, and delivering where needed;

substituting, if assigned, during temporary absences by performing delegated duties sufficient to maintain continuity of normal operations; committing to providing excellent customer service and demonstrating commitment through cooperative team and individual efforts; and creating a high quality work culture through participation in and emphasis on training and mentoring to develop leadership, management, and technical skills in self and all employees, including safety related training and skills.

Job Summary

The Road/Maintenance Worker, Senior performs and assigns day-to-day maintenance duties as directed. The incumbent assigns and participates in maintaining County roads including patching broken or eroded pavement, operating trucks, removing debris from roadways, and repairing street signs and crosswalks, operates heavy trucks or other heavy motorized equipment. The Road Maintenance, Senior is distinguished from the Road Maintenance Worker, Intermediate classification by greater work complexity, broader work responsibilities, to include some light oversight of workers, as directed.
