RequirementsEducation and Experience:
A High School Diploma, GED, or higher, and one (1) year of experience operating light or medium trucks, tractors, heavy equipment, related automotive equipment, and/or tow trucks. Must pass stringent background investigation.
Licenses and Certificates:
Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License or equivalent from another state. TCIC/NCIC Certification within six (6) months of appointment.
Positions assigned duties which require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to operate vehicles on public thoroughfares, or positions of a safety sensitive nature within El Paso Police Department, are subject to federal drug and alcohol testing regulations, which include pre-employment, post-accident, reasonable suspicion, random, return to duty and follow-up testing.
General PurposeUnder general supervision, enforce City Municipal code of abandoned or junked vehicles and perform towing duties that include the removal and impounding of vehicles, the transfer of vehicles for investigation purposes or disposal.
Typical Duties- Operate tow truck to remove vehicles for impounding, transfer vehicles for investigation purposes, or disposal. Involves:
Assist other divisions within the El Paso Police Department with removal or transferring of vehicles for department use. - Patrol assigned location within the City of El Paso limits looking for violations to the municipal ordinance code for abandoned and/or junked vehicles.
- Issue a Five (5)
-Day Tag notices to vehicles in violation of City ordinances. - Impound vehicles that are not in compliance with the City municipal ordinance and held for safekeeping.
- Transfer vehicles for investigative purposes, handle vehicles considered evidence, that possibly contain biohazards and/or dangerous chemicals.
- Transfer inoperable vehicles from various locations to designated garage for service.
- Assist in preparing vehicles for auction, remove license plates, stickers, inspect vehicles for valuables or contraband.
- Maintain daily work log, prepare necessary reports and paperwork to account for the vehicles and the work done for the day.
Perform duties of coworkers as necessary to ensure continuity of operations during absences. Cross-train in other duties and functions performed with the Abandoned Auto Unit and assist with training new employees. Perform other related duties as required.
