A High School diploma or GED, or higher, and two (2) years of experience as a Solid Waste Truck Driver, Truck Driver, or Equipment Operator, including one (1) year of Solid Waste Industry experience.
Licenses and CertificatesValid Texas Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License or equivalent from another state.
Special RequirementsIncumbents of positions requiring a CDL or of a safety sensitive nature are subject to drug and alcohol testing, and may be required to pass physical qualification examinations in accordance with federal regulations.
Under general supervision, function as lead worker and assist with supervising, leading, guiding and participating in waste and recycling collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste or recycling materials.
Supervise, lead, guide, oversee and participate in waste and recycling collection, transportation and disposal of solid waste or recycling materials. Involves:
Plan, assign, and supervise the work of solid waste collection crews, drivers, workers and others as assigned. Make adjustments to daily work requirements to assure completion of designated routes. Manage the day-to-day scheduling and work assignments of assigned employees. Demonstrate continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality customer service.
Complete time and activity sheets, accident, injury, and equipment condition reports. Interact with mechanical maintenance staff on equipment repairs and maintenance. Assist drivers with minor repairs on equipment. Supervise and participates in safety activities. Plan and execute training programs regarding operation of all types of solid waste equipment and safe operating practices. Train new and current employees and others as assigned in solid waste policies, procedures, regulations and operation of equipment.
Respond to telephone calls from citizens regarding solid waste services. Inform customers of service charges and regulations. Make decisions regarding employee complaints and problems. Complete various activity reports or other special projects. Ensure that department management is informed of critical issues or other emergencies.
Independently operate solid waste collection trucks, or lead assigned crew's on a regular designated route or to carry out special assignments. Involves:
Perform pre-trip inspection of assigned equipment and report any safety hazard on equipment to immediate supervisor. Maintain vehicle fluid levels and cleanliness. Check and service refuse collection equipment to insure good operating condition. Drive, and manipulate pick up and off loading controls of solid waste collection vehicles. Handle and dispose of hazardous chemicals, materials, and dead animals. Collect trash, garbage and other discarded bulky items from residents or from illegal dumping areas.
Manually lift and roll solid waste and recycling containers. Assist disabled customers by picking up trash container from side of residence. Report and tag garbage not picked up. Report sanitation code violations or obstructions to supervisor. Report vacant houses or businesses to supervisor as a means of keeping route book current. Prepare special collection tickets for limbs, appliances, furniture, or other items that cannot be picked up by regular crew.
Service collection routes requiring storage bins or compactors. Operate equipment and vehicles requiring special skills to include but not limited to side loaders, rear loaders, front end loaders, roll-off truck, grapple and other types of refuse transport equipment.
Function as a lead worker. Involves:
As authorized/assigned, may direct the work of others, including, but not limited to, assign work, delegate, review, inspect or accept work completed. Guide task performance. Train and develop employees. Prepare employees’ performance appraisals. Recall employees to work in emergencies. Resolve complaints. Recommend disciplinary action, vacation time approve and merit pay.
